Thursday afternoon’s snow signaled the arrival of winter for an extended stay in the Wichita area.
Wichita collected nearly a half-inch of snow, doubling its snow total for the winter. Clearwater and Harper both recorded 2 inches, and rural Sumner County reported 1.5 inches.
Today should offer plenty of sunshine, forecasters say, but highs will only be in the low 30s. Overnight lows will slide to the low double digits – potentially the coldest air of the winter in Wichita, National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Caruso said – and then Saturday will see highs merely in the mid-20s.
Sunday will be a bit warmer, returning to the low 30s, but then a wintry mix of precipitation arrives Sunday night into Monday morning.
“We’re going to get kind of a messy situation” with the coming storm system, Caruso said.
It’s shaping up to be a mix of snow, freezing rain and rain, he said, which could make travel difficult. Stay tuned for updated forecasts, and for current conditions go to our weather page.
