Strong storms bring warnings, more than an inch of rain – but no tornadoes – to Wichita overnight

The strong thunderstorms that rolled through the Wichita metropolitan area overnight brought more than an inch of rain to the city – but no tornadoes, despite activation of tornado sirens at about 2 a.m.

The sirens went off due to “some sort of glitch,” National Weather Service meteorologist Scott Smith said.

No tornado warnings were issued as a result of the storms, which did bring plenty of lightning, thunder and heavy rain. As of 7 a.m., 1.53 inches of rain had been reported at the official recording site next to Mid-Continent Airport.

More thunderstorms are possible later today in the Wichita area, Smith said, though the stronger storms are more likely south and east of the Wichita area.
