Keep an eye on the end of the week, Wichita

A strong storm system is expected to bring snow to western and central Kansas and powerful thunderstorms to Wichita and southeast Kansas Thursday and Friday, forecasters say.

A winter storm watch has already been issued for 17 counties in northwest, western and central Kansas from Thursday night into Sunday morning. Snowfall totals of 4 to 8 inches are expected north and west of a line from just north of Ulysses to Russell, the National Weather Service reports. Strong thunderstorms are likely Thursday night and Friday in the Wichita metropolitan area.

Some of those thunderstorms could be severe, forecasters say, with hail and strong winds. At this point, there’s little risk of tornadoes in the Wichita area Friday, but that threat increases south and east of Wichita and down into Oklahoma. Stay tuned to later forecasts for updated information.

Wichita weather: More 60s as February arrives

It’s a new month, but the same weather pattern persists for the Wichita area.

Highs should reach the 60s again under gradually clearing skies, forecasters say. Light north winds should remain in the single digits. Overnight lows will bottom out just above freezing, and Thursday will see more highs in the low 60s.

Skies should be mostly clear, forecasters say, and winds will shift around to the south and pick up strength. Breezes will be steady in the low teens, with gusts topping 20 miles an hour.

Chances for rain arrive Thursday night and will persist into the weekend, forecasters say. Snow flurries could be mixed in with the rain by Saturday night.
