With Tuesday’s high of 103, 2011 climbed into a tie for third-most 100-degree days in Wichita history.
There have been 42 triple-digit days this year, matching 1978 and 1954. With another 100-degree day expected later this week, and a few more weeks of hearty summer weather yet ahead, this year figures to soon have third place all to its own.
Next on the list: 1980, with 46.
The all-time mark is 50, set in 1936. That one may be beyond reach, but we’ll see.
After Tuesday added to Wichita’s triple digit tally for the summer, forecasters say today will be noticeably cooler.
Highs should top out in the low 90s, at least 10 degrees less than Tuesday’s high of 103. Mostly sunny skies and northeast winds touching double digits can be expected.
Tonight should be partly cloudy, with lows around 70. Winds are likely to shift around to the southeast and stay light, forecasters say, and then a slight chance of showers arrives Thursday morning. Highs Thursday will surge close to 100 again after the skies clear.
Friday may visit the 100s again before a cool front arrives for the weekend and early next week, forecasters say.
