Not even the Dust Bowl was this dry in Oklahoma

Here’s a troubling story about how dry the last four months have been in Oklahoma. It hasn’t been this dry over the same period since 1921 – even dryer than the Dirty Thirties.

While it hasn’t been quite that bad in Kansas, wildfires that erupted around the state over the past several days provide stark testimony to how parched the Sunflower State is in its own right.

Storm spotter talk in Sedgwick is next week, not tonight

The storm spotter training class set for tonight in Sedgwick is actually next week.

Sedgwick County Emergency Management officials blame a scheduling mix-up for the incorrect date. The training session will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Baptist Church, 400 E. Fourth.

Wichita weather: Sunny, warm, not as windy

Wichita will get a welcome break – at least to some degree – from the strong winds that have hounded the region over the past several days, forecasters say.

Southerly winds will only be about 5 to 15 miles an hour early on, before shifting to the west later in the day. Gusts will occasionally top 20 miles an hour – a speed that routinely was the sustained level (or higher) over the weekend and into this week.

Highs will be in the low 70s under sunny skies. Tonight’s low will only fall to the low 50s under mostly clear skies, forecasters say, and then Thursday brings a slight chance of thunderstorms with a high in the upper 70s.
