Wichita weather: Bitter cold, with dangerous wind chills

Gusty northwest winds will push wind chills well into the negative numbers today as the Wichita area shudders in a wave of arctic air.

Highs will not make it out of the teens today in Wichita, forecasters say. Winds will be steady in the teens and gust to more than 25 miles an hour. A wind chill advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service effective from midnight tonight through 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Wind chills are expected to be between -15 and -20 tonight, when the temperature is projected to fall to near zero. Wichita hasn’t posted a temperature below zero for more than five years.

Highs Wednesday should only reach the mid-teens, with sunny skies and wind chill values in the negative teens.
