Brutal cold arriving on the heels of next week’s snow

Enjoy this morsel of warm weather, Wichita.

The harshest cold of the winter – by far – is poised to move into the region on the heels of this weekend’s anticipated snow storm, according to the National Weather Service.

“It’s going to get bitter cold,” said Chris Jakub, a meteorologist with the Wichita branch of the weather service. “It might go all next week. It’s not looking like fun.”

Once the snow moves through the region on Monday – snowfall estimates are still as firm as scrawlings in the sand at high tide – cold air will slide in behind it.

“Welcome to the arctic,” Jakub said. “We’re looking at highs barely in the teens.”

Overnight lows Tuesday and Wednesday could fall below zero in central Kansas and close to zero in the Wichita area, he said.

Wichita weather: Almost toasty – for January

Temperatures are expected to soar all the way into the mid-50s today in the
Wichita area, forecasters say.

They’re being hoisted by gusty winds out of the west-northwest, which will top 20 miles an hour at times. Sunny skies are pitching in to the warm day as well.

Lows will slide into the upper 20s overnight, and Friday should also be warm, forecasters say. Highs are expected to climb into the 50s again under sunny skies.

But winter returns with a vengeance over the weekend, forecasters say, with chances for snow arriving on Sunday.
