Heaviest snow of the season looms for Wichita

A winter storm bearing down on the heartland today is expected to bring the heaviest snow of the winter to Wichita, forecasters say.

About 6 inches of snow is expected by the time flurries end on Friday afternoon. That would double the amount of snow that has fallen so far this winter.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning effective from 6 p.m. today to 6 p.m. Friday for 15 counties in southern Kansas, including the Wichita metropolitan area. Snowfall should begin late this afternoon and continue through much of Friday.

The heaviest snowfall rates will occur late tonight, forecasters say, with the highest amounts – about 9 inches – near the Oklahoma border. Temperatures today will top out at about 30, with lows in the upper teens.

Friday will be cold, with highs only in the low 20s. Lows will drop to near zero, thanks to the snowcover that will reflect heat back into the atmosphere.
