Speed Channel’s ‘Dangerous Drives’ to feature two storm chasers

Two storm chasers with Wichita ties, Jim Reed and Mike Phelps, will be featured in an episode of “Dangerous Drives” on the Speed Channel.

The show airs at 7 p.m. Central time and focuses on a storm chase in the Wichita area with the 1994 Ford Explorer Reed bought from a dealership in Cheney.

Phelps is a native of Wichita, and Reed has lived in Wichita off and on over the past several years, using it as a base for storm chasing in Tornado Alley.

Wintry blast arrives today for Wichita area

A wintry blast the likes of which Wichita hasn’t seen in more than a decade arrives later today.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory covering most of Kansas – including the Wichita area – until sometime Thursday. The advisory lasts until 6 a.m. Thursday in southcentral Kansas, and until 6 p.m. in Thursday in northern Kansas.

Light freezing drizzle is possible in the Wichita area this morning, changing over to snow this afternoon as the colder air arrives. Dangerously cold wind chills are expected as strong north winds follow the arrival of the snow.

Perhaps an inch of snow will fall in the Wichita area, with more snow in northern Kansas.

Temperatures are expected to reach the low 30s today, then fall dramatically as the front arrives. Lows will drop to the low single digits in Wichita tonight. Wind chills could drop to -30 in the region, forecasters caution.

A wind chill advisory will be in effect from 6 a.m. Thursday until noon on Friday.

Highs Thursday may not reach double digits in Wichita, and dangerous wind chills should persist into Friday.
