Tuesday night’s rainfall amounts vary widely around Wichita

The thunderstorms that moved through the region Tuesday night dumped heavy rain in isolated spots, leading to widely contrasting totals in locations not far at all from each other.

Officially, only .18 fell at the recording station next to Mid-Continent Airport in west Wichita. And rainfall totals around the city were generally less than a half-inch. But more than an inch fell 7 miles northeast of Wichita and .74 of an inch fell just north of Park City.

Heavy rain fell in eastern Butler County, and more than an inch fell southeast of Rose Hill. A reporting site one mile outside Augusta reported .75 of an inch.

Reno County, meanwhile, reported 1.2 inches about 6 miles southeast of Partridge and .79 of an inch 7 miles southeast of Pretty Prairie.

More than 2 inches fell next to Stafford and north of Dodge City.

Two tornadoes in Kansas on Tuesday

The Storm Prediction Center received 7 preliminary reports of tornadoes from storms around the country on Tuesday: 2 in Kansas, 3 in Illinois and one each in Louisiana and Ohio.

The Kansas tornadoes were a pair of landspouts that touched down briefly in Ford County – one about 7 miles southwest of Dodge City and the other 5 miles west-southwest of Windthorst, an unincorporated village south of U.S. 50 known mostly for its historic, now-closed Catholic church.

No damage was reported from the Kansas tornadoes.

A notably cooler Wednesday for Wichita

WICHITA – A few sprinkles may linger in the metropolitan area this morning, but Wednesday will be defined by its much cooler temperatures.

Highs today will be in the mid-70s, about 15 degrees cooler than Monday. Northerly winds in the teens and gusts into the 20s will make the day feel even cooler, forecasters say.

Sunshine should return to the region on Thursday, with temperatures warming up along the way. Highs should reach the 90s by the weekend.
