Large hail and damaging winds may hit Wichita overnight

The National Weather Service is urging residents of the Wichita area to be prepared for the possibility of large hail and damaging straight-line winds overnight.

The hail could be as large as baseballs, the weather service warns. If you have a garage or other way to protect your vehicles, use it.

The strong storms could continue through Friday morning before shoving east, forecasters warn. Tornadoes are not considered a threat with these storms.

Sunny and warm for Wichita today, but storms possible tonight

A second straight warm, sunny day awaits Wichita today, forecasters say, but strong storms could strike late tonight.

Highs should reach the mid-80s, with southerly breezes in the teens today. Thunderstorms are possible this afternoon, forecasters say, but should be much more numerous throughout the region after midnight.

The National Weather Service reports the storms could produce hail the size of golf balls and winds of at least 60 miles an hour. More showers are possible Friday morning, but the weekend should be dry – good news for the start of the Wichita River Festival.
