Severe weather threat blossoming for portions of Kansas Thursday

The Storm Prediction Center out of Norman, Okla., has posted a slight risk for severe weather in the southeastern quarter of Kansas on Thursday.

Wichita is included in the risk zone, but the local National Weather Service office reports that large hail and damaging winds do not appear to be a threat for the metropolitan area. The city should instead be in line for some welcome rainfall.

The strongest storms appear most likely from Coffeyville and Chanute on east, including portions of northeast Oklahoma, southwestern Missouri and a large portion of Arkansas.

Check back for later forecasts, however. If the storm system’s track and speed shift much, that could change the target zone for the most severe weather.

A beautiful day for the Wichita area

This is shaping up to be the nicest day of the week – in fact, the nicest day for quite a spell now – for Wichita, forecasters say.

Sunny skies, temperatures flirting with 70, and light winds will grace the metropolitan area today.

Showers are expected to move in after midnight and linger through the day Thursday. Highs will cool to the lower 60s under mostly cloudy skies.

The next chance of rain comes late Saturday night and Easter Sunday, forecasters say.
