Cowley County tornadoes

Storm chaser Roger Hill, whom I met several years ago when Eagle photographer Travis Heying and I chronicled a storm chase tour, sent me two photos of brief tornadoes that touched down in Cowley County not far from Arkansas City on March 23. They were two of 17 tornadoes reported around the Midwest that day.

Five tornadoes were reported in Kansas, including two near Geuda Springs – though I suspect those two reports are of the same tornado at different points of its brief existence.

Five more tornadoes were reported in Nebraska, including two that injured a total of eight people. Four tornadoes touched down in Iowa, two in Oklahoma and one in South Dakota.

Wintry conditions for a Monday in April

It feels much more like winter than spring on the first Monday of April in Wichita.

The wind chill is in the teens and the record for low temperature could fall tonight as cold weather refuses to release the region just yet. High temperatures today are expected to reach only into the low 40s in the metropolitan area, with strong winds out of the northwest gusting to more than 40 miles an hour.

The low could dip into the teens tonight, forecasters say. That would break the record for low temperature on April 7 in Wichita, which is 23 in 2007.

The rest of the week should be much warmer, with highs in the 60s.
