More Kansas tornado facts and figures from 2008

Last May was the busiest month ever recorded for tornadoes in Kansas, according to the National Weather Service.

There were 127 tornadoes in Kansas last May, more than twice the average for an entire year. A two-day outbreak in western Kansas on May 22-23 recorded 87 tornadoes. Not surprisingly, the three counties who shared the mark of most tornadoes in 2009 all are located in northwest Kansas: Gove, Sheridan and Trego.

A gray, wintry day for the Wichita area

March will be performing a convincing version of mid-winter today, with cold temperatures under mostly cloudy skies and freezing drizzle possible overnight.

Highs will peak in the mid- to upper 30s, while east winds gust to about 20 miles an hour. The National Weather Service reports that the best chance of freezing drizzle will be west of I-35 and I-135. The freezing drizzle could continue well into Friday morning, forecasters say, before temperatures climb into the 40s.

Snow flurries are possible early in the weekend, but then a warmup will commence.
