Statewide tornado drill planned for today

The statewide tornado drill is scheduled to be held at 1:30 p.m. today – unless it’s overcast.

Regardless of the weather, it’s a good day to review your response plans and to make sure your basement, safe room or other destination for severe weather threats is ready for the coming season.

The National Weather Service has put together a disaster survival kit that includes items which should be kept where you’ll take shelter.

I realize it’s no fun to think about what to do in the event of a tornado or strong thunderstorm bearing down on your house. But the calmer parents are in responding to these situations, the calmer their children – perhaps even their pets – are likely to be as well.

And that’ll help everyone when moments count.

Wintry weather returning to Wichita

Old Man Winter’s not done with Wichita just yet.

Much colder temperatures are arriving in the metropolitan area today, and will linger through the rest of the week. Highs will peak in the upper 40s today as a cold front slides through the Great Plains. North winds will be steady in the teens and gust to nearly 30 miles an hour, forecasters said.

Cloudy skies will gradually clear as the day unfolds, and then sunshine will predominate the rest of the week. Highs will be in the upper 30s on Wednesday and the low 40s on Thursday, forecasters say.
