Storms likely today in Wichita area

Severe Weather Awareness Week kicks off in Kansas today with a fresh round of severe weather possible in Wichita and southern sectors of the state.

Thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and evening, local forecasters say, and they could turn severe if enough moisture and afternoon heating arrive in the area.

The Storm Prediction Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has placed portions of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas under a slight risk of severe weather today. Wichita and most of eastern Kansas is included in the elevated risk.

Highs in the Wichita metropolitan area should reach the upper 60s under mostly cloudy skies, forecasters say. Storms are likely between 1 p.m. and 1 a.m.

Monitor conditions and forecasts closely this afternoon and evening.
