Here’s another photo sent to me by a friend in Sumner County Monday night. Some may think it’s a funnel cloud stretching out horizontally from the cloud base, but it’s not.
It’s not even a tail cloud, which is a horizontal cloud that forms from a wall cloud. Since there’s no wall cloud here, that can’t be a tail cloud.
Dick Elder, meteorologist-in-charge at the National Weather Service in Wichita, took a look at the photo for me and told me the cloud is simply the result of moist air being drawn back into the updraft of this particular shower.
Nevertheless, I found the image compelling.
