It’s never rained this much in Wichita before

The remnants of Tropical Storm Lowell are rewriting Wichita’s record book.

The record for most rain in a 24-hour period in Wichita was 7.99 inches on Sept. 6-7, 1911. As of 1 p.m. today, 8.27 inches of rain had fallen….in just 12 hours. That number will climb, too.

“We’re not done yet” with the rain, National Weather Service meteorology intern Jerilyn Billings said.

Talk about an unwanted record……

Are these rainfall amounts taken from the same location? If so -that would mean almost 2 inches fell in 10 minutes?? At least according to your previous blog entry Stan.

I’m thinking that the amount of rainfall is only as accurate as the updates on the telly. NWS has even had sporatic updates, for instance, I logged on to their site tonight to see how much rain came in the deluge we just got, and for 10 minutes it said n/a before it said .89 inches. I think that might account for the 2 inches in 10 minutes…

And I’m also thinking we need to call Noah. Good Lord…10+ inches for 9/12 and another inch in the first hour of 9/13??

I’m amazed that my basement is still dry.

It has rained like this before, about 20 years or so ago. Everything was flooded, it rained hard for several days. I saw motor boats going up the drainage ditch. The water was short of going over the top. Mr Finger you must not have lived here very long.
