A soggy St. Pat’s

Plenty of rain fell in Wichita on Monday – 1.86 inches at Mid-Continent Airport on the west side and 1.59 inches at Jabara Airport on the east side. But officials reported no flooding. Why? The rain came in bands, allowing the water to soak into thirsty ground. Until Monday, March had been pretty dry in Wichita. Less than an inch had fallen over the first 16 days of the month, which included a two-week dry spell.

A deadly year for tornadoes

A sobering 69 people have been killed by tornadoes through March 15. That’s the second-highest total through mid-March since 1971, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Prediction Center. Considering that a tornado somehow hopped over Nashville in February and that no one died when an EF2 tornado ripped through the heart of Atlanta Friday night, that total could easily have been much, much higher.

Hello world!

You’ve heard the old saying: Everyone talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.

Well, we want to give you a place to talk about the weather. And hopefully we’ll do something with it: Inform. Enlighten. Entertain.

So come join us as we begin this conversation. Share your thoughts, your observations, your weather photos.

As anyone who has lived in Kansas knows – the weather here isn’t just an afterthought, it’s an event.
