Roll Call (The one with Amy Martinez and Alex Harvey)

HOME SWEET HOME

HOME SWEET HOME

This week’s Roll Call has a decidely Wichita feel to it, specifically the west side of the Air Capitol, with a couple of former Maize and Northwest stars steamrolling league honors for the week.

Oh, and Bryan Haynes is still really fast.

Away we go:

Roll Call (Unless you forgot it was spring)

Unless you forgot it was spring … we’ve got golf, track & field, tennis baseball and softball all in the Roll Call mix this week. And while we’ve got the KCAC and the MIAA on top of their game, I’m starting to think that the ole’ KJCCC isn’t doling out awards this spring. But if you can find them I’d be more than happy to put them up here.

So here we go, by sport:

BASEBALL

MIAA: Nada. I’m thinking Connor Crumbliss got robbed here.

CHAD JOHNSON

CHAD JOHNSON

KCAC: Sterling catcher Chad Johnson had a big week for the first-place Warriors, who went 3-1 while CJ hit .500 (7-for-14) along with 4 RBIs and 6 runs on his way to KCAC Player of the Week honors. Props to the SC sports staff who are keeping the team’s Web site running smoothly. Love it when they’ve got all the pics and team info readily available. Eric Cordell of Ottawa was your KCAC pitcher of the week.

TREVER ADAMS

TREVER ADAMS

JAYHAWK: Hutchinson’s Trever Adams was the NJCAA DI player of the week, which definitely gets you up and running on Sunflower Slate. The Lincoln, Neb., hit. 542 last week and, even though the Blue Dragons went 3-4 in seven games, dude had 13 hits, three doubles, scored 12 runs, drove in 11 and hit FIVE home runs. Nice.

Roll Call: All the best from the KCAC, MIAA and Jayhawk

HEATHER ROBBEN

HEATHER ROBBEN

So we knew HCC freshman Heather Robben could score a little bit, and we knew she could rebound a little bit. But Saturday the Maize product showed she could do a lot of both, and in a big-time situation, exploding for season-high totals of 25 points and 16 rebounds in a 61-56 upset of No. 10 Cloud County on Saturday (and she also hi. She’s leading her team in scoring (14.3), second in rebounding (6.2) and leads the entire Jayhawk in ft-shooting percentage at 82.5. And that’s also why I put her in the state/juco notes package this week, so read up on her and her team, which is still in the hunt for the West title … and know that the Jayhawk doesn’t put out their players of the week until Tuesday, and it’s kind of suspect at that, so she definitely gets player of the week awards from Sunflower Slate. Most definitely.

Roll Call: We’ve got Fab Frosh, ESU rolling and … indoor track!

MEGAN PATRICK

MEGAN PATRICK = AK 2.0

So the Sterling women’s basketball team has got this forward, she’s around six-feet tall, she can play outside and inside, she’s a small-town girl from Kansas and she’s really, really good … and she’s not Ashley Kraft.

Sunflower Slate-ians, meet Sterling freshman Megan Patrick. Or, better yet, AK 2.0

The Hutch Central Christian product is the KCAC women’s player of the week after averaging 15 points, 10.5 rebounds and hitting 5 of 9 threes in wins over Tabor and Friends. She’s averaging 9.5 points and 4.2 rebounds for the first-place, No. 7 Warriors. So this begs the question: How good a recruiter is Lonnie Kruse?

Roll Call: WINTER BEGINS IN EARNEST

Hello all. Roll call is definitely back in the house.

Let’s get this rolling. Not as much to deal with as in the fall … but just as important.

No players of the week to speak of — yet — in the KCAC but I’ll get into that in a minute. And the Jayhawk won’t start putting them out, apparently, until after the new year. Bummer.

Roll call: Best of the MIAA and KCAC

Pittsburg State, anybody?

Colleague Gary Karr and I talk state/juco stuff incessantly and can’t figure them out. They looked terrible in a loss to Northwest Missouri, their only loss. But against anybody else … they’re money. And it looks like they’re back on track. Be nice to see their defense actually shut somebody down some week, but it’s a little late for all that, right?

Lots of familiar faces in this week’s roll call, with another Schrag pulling another KCAC volleyball award and the Gorillas taking offensive and defensive MIAA honors.

Let’s roll:

Roll Call: Best of the MIAA, Heartland, KCAC and Jayhawk (9/22)

Some people hate Mondays. I love them. Because they’re my Fridays and … it’s player of the week time!

I did this by conference last week, but this time I’m going to switch it up and try by sport. FYI, Bethel and Ottawa cleaned up in the KCAC awards, ESU volleyball player Ting Liu is a stud, and the Friends University Web Site definitely needs to throw some mug shots on there.

Here it goes:
