Stayed up a little late socializing at the unofficial NW High School hoops reunion last night — we had 1992 to 1999 pretty well represented — just a bunch of ex-athletes getting together, trying to recapture a little of the glory of … well, you get it.

Enough with that, time for Roll Call, in the wink of a young girl’s eye:

MIAA

STEVE IVANISEVIC

FOOTBALL: Nobody deserved player of the week honors more than Washburn kicker Steve Ivanisevic, who almost kicked the Ichabods to the MIAA upset of the decade in a 22-19 OT loss at Northwest Missouri. Ivanisevic tied the school record for the second time this season with four FGs in the loss, including a 41-yarder as time expired to send it to OT. On defense, ESU linebacker Nathan Linsey was the player of the week after 14 tackles in a win over Truman. Quick interlude: What happens now at ESU? Is there a shake up at the top? The administration has shown, in the past, that there is an onus on winning. So when they’re this bad…

ARICA SHEPARD

VOLLEYBALL: Can anybody stop Arica Shepard? The senior All-American from Emporia State is having absolutely the kind of senior season the Hornets needed from her and is the hitter of the week in the MIAA once again. Question: if ESU can hold on and win its second straight MIAA title, isn’t she the Player of the Year? Or is it ESU setter Ting Liu again? Washburn’s Kate Hampson was the specialist of the week.

NEWMAN

CHRISTINA FARID

On the road, top 10 opponent, late in season? No problem for Newman women’s goalie Christina Farid, who led the Jets to a 1-0 win over No. 7 St. Edward’s last Friday in Austin, Texas. Farid, a Maize product, had seven saves in the upset and stopped a PK in overtime to earn Heartland Conference defensive player of the week honors. Newman men’s player Stephen Williams was the Heartland player of the week on D, also.

KCAC

SCOTT JONES

FOOTBALL: So you already know what Ethan Haller did to Saint Mary last week — hitting for 379 yards and 3 TDs while becoming Ottawa’s all-time passing leader. With the Braves at No. 7 and undefeated … is it too soon to start thinking about All-American honors for EH? And I don’t mean HM or 2nd team, which is nothing to sneeze at, but could the Big Kahuna come out of the KCAC? Dude’s gonna pass for over 4,000 this year and … if they run the KCAC table and win a playoff game (or two) how can you deny the man? McPherson’s Scott Jones was the defensive POW with 7 tackles — 4 for loss — and two sacks in a win over Southwestern. Jones is a nice player — 6-foot-4, 255 pound defensive ends will work on any level. Friends punter/kicker Drew Johnson, a Valley Center product, was the man on special teams.

VOLLEYBALL: So I guess Ashley Kraft is playing volleyball for Sterling. I’d like to officially file this under things I should have known but did not. It’s getting to be a thick file. Anyhow — AK was the KCAC offensive player of the week as the Warriors pulled a sweep of the weekly kudos with Kraft, Adriana Gonzales (setter) and Kelsey Deerinwater (special teams).

LAUREN PEIL

SOCCER: On the men’s side, Kansas Wesleyan’s Arturo Guizar was the offensive player of the week and KWU goalie Diego Millan was the defensive winner. For the women, McPherson’s Haley Cook scored three goals in two matches to win offense and Campus product Lauren Peil pitched two shutouts in goal for Ottawa to win on defense. Peil, just a sophomore, is having another great year, and I’m assuming a 5-foot-11 goalie in women’s soccer is a nice advantage to have.

JAYHAWK

There’s a game this weekend, right? Something about nationall ranked teams … something or another I just can’t put my finger on it … help me out, will ya?

JOHN ROBLES

FOOTBALL: I’m funny, right? Two guys that will play a big part in Saturday’s game will be Ross Dausin, the Butler QB, and Fort Scott RB Justin Woods. They share offensive player of the week honors, so there’s that. On defense, it was Coffeyville DE John Robles, who looks like a pretty happy guy, and Ginormous Fort Scott DT Anthony White.

VOLLEYBALL: In four matches, Hutch’s Kate Morrell averaged almost five blocks per game — going 3, 4, 6, 6. That’s called consistency, brothers and sisters. And for that, she took home co-player of the week honors with Seward’s Sheina Fernandes.

That’s all I got. Time to go work on my Harrison Dreiling feature for Saturday … here’s a pic of the man in action to hold you over until then. TA

Like I’ve said before, it’s never too late for Roll Call.
Before we jump right in, any predictions on the Washburn-NW Missouri game in Maryville tomorrow? I’m saying 35-21 NWMSU.
Here you go:

Before we jump right in, any predictions on the Washburn-NW Missouri game in Maryville tomorrow? I’m saying 35-21 NWMSU.

Here you go:

MIAA

CJ LOVETT LOVES ROLL CALL

FOOTBALL: Dane Simoneau was a no-brainer for the POW on offense after what he did to Pitt State — 362 yards passing & 5 TDs in just three quarters. But Out West, Fort Hays cornerback CJ Lovett continues to make his case as the league’s best (And don’t come at me with Myles Burnsides — it’s not 2008) with two picks in a win over Nebraska-Omaha. The kicker? The first pick was at the FHSU 2 and he returned it 53 yards to set up a TD. The second was in the FHSU endzone and tied Mike Allen (1987-1990) for the Tigers’ career int. record with 13. This is CJ’s third Player of the Week honor, with the first two coming on special teams. What’d you do this fall?

VOLLEYBALL: There’s a dogfight at the top of the MIAA standings, and with a ton of volleyball left to be played, nothing is certain. ESU swept Player of the Week honors with OH Arica Shepard and setter Ting Liu this week, and are in second place in league — 9-2 record — behind Central Missouri at 11-1. The Mules have a a 17-match winning streak that should be at 18 when they travel to ESU next Wednesday.

CROSS-COUNTRY: ESU also swept weekly honors here, with a pair of sophomores in Adam McGovern and Kaite Mona.

NEWMAN

HEATHER BALOGA

While hoops season can’t get here quick enough over off West Kellogg, there are some Jets who keep reeling in weekly Heartland Conference honors for their fall sports, namely Melissa Ortiz, who smashed her own 4K school record at the Ollie Isom Invite, where she finished fourth, right behind Mona. Women’s soccer player Mallory Hurst was the HC’s offensive player of the week after putting up two goals and two assists in a 5-0 win over Texas A&M-International. Defender Heather Baloga was the defensive POW for leading the charge against A&M and scoring a goal in a 1-1 tie with No. 18 Incarnate Word.

KCAC

STEPHEN HARRISON

FOOTBALL: Stephen Harrison … Bravo, young man, Bravo.

The senior wide receiver from McPherson not only took KCAC special teams Player of the Week, he hit ‘em up for NAIA national special teams honors, too. Stephen dropped 244 all-purpose yards on KWU in last Saturday’s 52-38 win, which included returning a kickoff 80 yards for a TD to open the second half. He’s fifth in the country in all-purpose yards at 177 per game. For the offensive and defensive POWS, we saw something we haven’t seen around these parts for a looooonnng time. Southwestern. QB Jordan Barrett was the man on offense after The Jinx upset Bethany, and Moundbuilders’ DB Nick Koch was the man on defense with two picks in the win.

ADDISON WOLF

VOLLEYBALL: First-place Tabor and second-place Friends go at it on Monday in Hillsboro in a match that could go a long ways towards determining the league champ. Until then, we’ve got Roll Call to tide us over. Friends’ Addie Petersen was the hitter of the week after the Chanute native helped the Falcons’ gut out a gruesome week of non-conference games. Bethel’s Addison Wolf was the libero of the week and Saint Mary’s Stephanie Wright took Hitter of the Week.

MEN’S SOCCER: Sterling’s Cuyler Prichard was the man on offense and 6-foot-5 McPherson defender Tank Tyler (yes, that’s really his name) was the defensive POW.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Ottawa isn’t going to lose to anybody in the KCAC this year. Point blank, period. They’re 6-0 and nobody is even threatening them on the way to their first league title since 2006. Forward Whitney Brown (offense) and defender Christie Johnson (defense) were the KCAC POWs.

CROSS COUNTRY: Friends junior Dan Neidlinger finisht 10th at the Isom Invite to win men’s honors, and KWU’s Crystal Stegman, a Salina native, finished sixth at the same invite to take women’s kudos.

JAYHAWK

KENDALL DAVIS

FOOTBALL: Heights product Kendall Davis was the NJCAA defensive player of the week after taking two picks TO THE HOUSE for the Blue Dragons in a rout of Air Force Prep last Saturday. I’m interested to see how HCC finishes out the season after a disastrous three-game skid that saw losses to Fort Scott, Butler and … Coffeyville. Mainly, is it even possible for the Blue Dragons to think about a bowl game at this point? I’ve got a lot of bowl questions, actually. But we’ll save that for a later date. Hutch RBs Chris Clay (181, 2 Tds) and Chris Anderson (160, TD) split offensive honors. Fort Scott DB Dennis Herbin split Jayhawk honors with Davis after his 4-Int performance against Highland.

HEAVEN ON EARTH? NO, IT'S JUST THE ADC.

VOLLEYBALL: Places I’d like to go … Arraial do Cabo, Brazil might be right up there. That’s where Hutch outside hitter Karol Marins is from, and she’s the KJCCC player of the week after leading the No. 13 Blue Dragons to wins over No. 9 Seward County and Pratt.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Under protest, I give you this. There can’t be five of them. Sorry, there just can’t.

MEN’S SOCCER: Ryan Richardson, Coffeyville. One man, one award. I like the logic.

I’m outta here … gotta go wait in line for Bon Jovi tickets.

Our fair state got blanked on the football side of things, which wasn’t really a surprise considering the big showdown between NW Missouri and Missouri Western last Saturday (NWMSU won), but we swept in volleyball as Emporia State’s Arica Shepard was the hitter of the week and Washburn’s Kate Hampson was the setter of the week. BTW, they play next Friday. That might be kind of exciting. As far as football this weekend … I’m pretty interested in the goings on down in Pittsburg, although I think they’ll get an easy win, but I’m really interested in seeing how Washburn does at Nebraska-Omaha.

MELISSA ORTIZ

Newman gets kind of forgotten during the fall sports, because, well, they don’t have football. And their volleyball team isn’t very good. But what they do have is one of the best women’s cross country runners in the country in senior Melissa Ortiz, a Wichita West product. How good is Ortiz? She finished third at the Oklahoma State Jamboree last week to win Heartland Conference runner of the week honors. Fellow Jet Austin Hunt was the men’s HC runner of the week.

KCAC

I’m just gonna put a list of the honorees below because, well, the thing I really want to talk about is the Friends football team. Sorry. The winners are down there and they did a good job, I’m sure.

So Friends … I didn’t realize until today, that after their opening-game debacle against McPherson, they’ve won three straight games against three straight winless teams. That’s right. Southwestern, Tabor and Bethel. Now I don’t think Bethel is a bad football team, Southwestern and Tabor definitely are, but not the Threshers. But I don’t think that matters for Friends. I do think Bethany is going to beat Bethel this weekend and then Southwestern for sure the weekend after that. That means on Oct. 24 we’ll get ranked Friends vs. ranked and undefeated Bethany in Lindsborg. I saw that one coming all the way, didn’t you?

Oh … and I’m really feeling the new KCAC INSIDER online show. Check it out if you’ve got a shot. And who is Coleman Swierc, anyways? Anybody know?

FOOTBALL: offensive, QB Steven Baker, Bethany; defensive, LB Jeff Paulson, McPherson; special teams, P/K Michael Cebold, Ottawa . VOLLEYBALL: hitter, Tina Frick, Tabor; setter, Mandi Phillips. Tabor (AGAIN); libero/defense Kelsey Deerinwater, Sterling. MEN’S SOCCER: offense, MF Jose Garay, KWU; defense, GK Diego Millan, KWU. WOMEN’S SOCCER: offense, MF Alejandra Rojas, Southwestern; defense, D Heather Muilenburg, KWU. CROSS COUNTRY: men, Andrew Topham, Southwestern; women, Amy Pierson, Southwestern.

As far as the Jayhawk … Hutch plays at Coffeyville, and Butler has the week off.

What else do you need to know?

Adios, TA.

Roll Call is light this week, but still packs a punch, starting with Washburn linebacker Zach Watkins, who is going to become the Ichabods all-time leading tackler at some point this season.

As far as who won what this weekend. .. Kansas Wesleyan managed to pull out a miracle with a Hail Mary against Bethel and Fort Hays State managed to beat Emporia State with Oktoberfest AND Homecoming swirling around them Out West. I guess you could call me easily distracted.

And please, do yourself a favor and click on the Watkins link above. I’m loving that hair. I’ll tell him when I talk to him on Wednesday. And pray he’s not mad.

Let’s go:

MIAA

FOOTBALL: When Washburn needed him most, Watkins was there, piling up 13 tackles — two for loss — and forcing a fumble in Washburn’s 36-21 win over No. 11 Central Missouri on Saturday in Topeka. The MIAA defensive player of the week’s big play helped vault The Ichabods back into the national rankings at No. 17. They get Fort Hays in Top City on Saturday.

KCAC

FOOTBALL: The NE corner of the state dominated this week’s awards, with No. 11 Ottawa grabbing the defensive player of the week in senior linebacker Ross Diehl and special teams kudos to Jarvis Morehead-Reed for … blocking a field-goal attempt? Well, when you win 23-21, that matters, people. Saint Mary QB Daniel Robles lit up lowly Southwestern to take offensive honors.

MANDI PHILLIPS

VOLLEYBALL: Tabor sophomore setter Mandi Phillips — a Halstead product — has put the lockdown on the setter of the week award in the KCAC so far this season. She’s won 3 of 4 so far and did it again this week for the first-place Bluejays. Teammate Gina Hullet was the hitter of the week and Bethel libero Addison Wolf was the libero/def. specialist POW.

SOCCER: McPherson’s Armando Rodriguez was the offensive men’s player of the week … and there was no defensive hotshot. On the women’s side, Bethany’s Megan Zavier was the offensive player of the week with three goals for the first-place Swedes in three wins. Bethany goalie Sarah Garlock took defensive honors with three straight shutouts and homegirl hasn’t been scored on in 373 minutes.

CROSS COUNTRY: Friends sophomore Jordan Arnold won the Tabor Invitational with a time of 18:09 over a 5K course. Is that fast? Just playing.

Away we go:

MIAA

JAMES WALKER

FOOTBALL: Fort Hays State’s James Walker grabbed offensive player of the week honors for his big day in the Tigers’ win over Truman State — a must-win with Emporia State coming to town on Saturday. Walker went for 200 yards rushing, the first such effort for FHSU since 2005. He’s third in the MIAA in rushing at 93 yds./game. Oh, and nice mohawk, JW.

VOLLEYBALL: Emporia State is 13-0, No. 3 in the country and their two best players are playing like, well, their two best players. Outside hitter Arica Shepard and setter Ting Liu took MIAA honors this week after another big week where A. Shep averaged just over 4 kills per game and T. Liu was almost at 13 for assists per game. And they also beat No. 19 Truman, the team that’s ended their season the last two years. Oh, and I wrote a story about them today.

KCAC

FOOTBALL: So as a former receiver — er, tight end that is — as any former whatever can attest, not in your wildest dreams do you think about having the game Corey Schultz had for Ottawa in its win over McPherson. And he’s the offensive POW for it. On the defensive side, it looks like Friends has a new star-in-the-making in freshman defensive end Dexter Davis, who had 4 1/2 sacks in the Falcons’ 45-7 win over Southwestern. Opposite Jordan Highley, he could learn a thing or two. Now he’s got to do it against good competition. Southwestern’s Jess Maddos was the man on special teams.

CHANDRA SLATES

VOLLEYBALL: So is there usually a big contingent of Haysville-ites at Friends games or what? They’ve got two Slates on the roster, both Campus products, Lorielle and …. Chandra, who is the KCAC hitter of the week. The senior middle sparked a 3-game win streak for the Falcons with 32 kills. Tabor’s Mandi Phillips repeated as setter of the week and Sterling’s Kesley Deerinwater was the libero/defensive honoree.

MEN’S SOCCER: Kansas Wesleyan senior Arturo Guizar wasn’t just the KCAC player of the week, he hit ‘em up for national honors, too, scoring three goals in wins over undefeated William Jewell and Graceland, which was ranked. KWU goalkeeper Diego Millan was the defensive POW.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Friends swept the women’s awards, with soph. forward Abbey Cunningham as the offensive top dog and freshman Lisa Nguyen on defense. They’re both from the 316 if you’re keeping track. I am.

CROSS COUNTRY: KWU’s Ernest Cruz was the men’s winner and Crystal Stegman, also a ‘Yote, was the women’s.

JAYHAWK

JASMIN HOPKINS

FOOTBALL: There’s something in the air … I think it’s all these games between top 10 opponents coming up. I walked outside today and the temp has dropped … feels like football weather, finally. And Butler running back Ricky Jacques and Fort Scott RB Jasmin Hopkins seem like they’re ready for battle. The co-offensive players of the week had big games, with Jacques going for 151 yards and 1 TD in a win over Air Force Prep and Hopkins going for 267 and 2 TDs in a win over Garden City. If you haven’t seen Hopkins play yet, do yourself a favor and go check dude out. His game is nice. Fort Scott linebacker Lavonte David and Hutch DB Matthew Pearson were the co-defensive POWs. Both returned picks for TDs in wins last week, and Pearson, another WICHITAN, also picked up a fumble and took it to the house. Butler punter/kicker Logan Ortiz was the special teams player of the week. Think Bill Snyder wishes he was in Manhattan right now? Seriously, though, Josh Cherry is TERRIBLE. How is he a DI kicker? Where’s our old HFCBS to pull the plug?

I think that’s all I got. If this was your first Roll Call, welcome to my Wolfpack.

Oh, and Bethany LB Marvin Barnes will be signing autographs in the lobby of The Wichita Eagle from now until you finish this sentence.

Enough with the fun and games:

MIAA

ERIC LAWRENCE

FOOTBALL: While you were sleeping, Washburn quarterback Dane Simoneau came into his own for the now-No. 22 Ichabods. And while I was sleeping, Washburn swept the MIAA player of the week honors after its 54-31 win over Missouri Southern. Simoneau was the offensive hero with 306 yards and 3 TDs in only three quarters, PK Steve Ivanisevic hit ‘em up for special teams kudos after hitting 4 FGs and going 6-6 on extra points and Belleglade, Fla., product Eric Lawrence was defensive POW after wreaking havoc from d-end to the tune of seven tackles, 2.5 sacks and 3.5 TFL. If Washburn can find a way to beat Missouri Western on the road Saturday … the following game against Central Missouri in Topeka is as big as they get around there.

VOLLEYBALL: Pittsburg State’s Pamela Cartagena is good. Like All-American good. Could she be an outside contender for MIAA player of the year honors? Well … it’s too early to tell, but the senior OH took MIAA hitter of the week honors after banging out 54 kills in 4 matches at the UCM Peggy Martin Classic in Warrensburg, Mo., over the weekend.

KCAC

FOOTBALL: Here’s what Ottawa QB Ethan Haller would have to do to surprise me at this point — throw for over 600 yards, 10 touchdowns, deliver a baby at halftime and run into a burning building to save a little old lady during the coach’s postgame talk. And fill up the Gatorade bottles. Dude, your 520 yards and 5 TDs against Bethel aren’t impressing anybody. Except for maybe the people that voted him KCAC offensive POW.

Marvin Barnes

Now about Marvin.

My man Marvin Barnes pulled a James Harrison for Bethany on Saturday against Saint Mary returning an interception 96 yards for a TD as time expired in the first half of what would be an 18-13 win for the Swedes. Oh, and he had nine tackles and a pass breakup. And he also was KCAC defensive POW. And a prime candidate for some Sunflower Slate Q&A. He needs a nickname. How about Good News?

McPherson kicker/punter Travis Eason was your man on special teams.

ASHLEY COHLMIA

VOLLEYBALL: There’s something about Tabor stud Ashley Cohlmia that we really like here at Roll Call … wait … is it … oh yeah, she’s from the ICT. And she’s also the KCAC hitter of the week after the Bluejays went 4-1 last week and AC racked up 44 kills. Teammate Mandi Phillips was her Partner in Crime, grabbing setter of the week. Friends libero Erin Cooper — who stands only 5-foot — was the libero/specialist of the week. So the next time you complain about not being tall enough…

SOCCER: We’ve got Kansas Wesleyan’s David Hernandez as the men’s offensive POW and McPherson goalkeeper Blake Jett as the defensive POW. For the women, it was Ottawa’s Jo-anne Glynn on offense and Ottawa defender Christie Johnson on defense.

CROSS COUNTRY: I’m losing steam. Matt Ditzler for Friends took men’s honors and Southwestern’s Amy Pierson did it for the women.

JAYHAWK

On a totally different note — much props to the KJCCC for getting its Players of the Week out in a timely fashion. I can’t say how much this helps.

FOOTBALL: Wait a second, I thought Chris Clay was the stud running back for Hutchinson this season. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe it’s Clay and freshman running back Chris Anderson, who broke the Blue Dragons’ single-game scoring record with 6 TDs against Highland last Saturday. That’s not gonna be a lot of fun for Dodge City to try to prep for this weekend. No sir.

On defense, Butler linebacker Forlando Johnson split weekly honors with Hutch linebacker Chip Hester. Just a couple of guys from SEC country, that’s all (Johnson is from Georgia and Hester is from S. Carolina). Special teams awards went to Butler kicker/punter Logan Ortiz and Hutch punter Schuyler Watson, an Ark City product.

I think … yeah … now I’m done.

TA.

We’re calling this the first Roll Call of the year — even though it isn’t quite a full version yet because we don’t have our whole KCAC schedule going, but soon enough. And the studs we do have coming out to play … well they’re tearing it up.

Let’s dive right in:

MIAA

FOOTBALL: Our Kansas schools cleaned up in the football POW awards, with new Pittsburg State quarterback John McCoy grabbing offensive honors, All-American safety Alex Kuhlman doing it on the defensive side and … DRUMROLL PLEASE … my man C.J. Lovett doing it again on special teams for Fort Hays State. Thoughts? Kuhlman always delivers. Seriously. Dude figures out a way to make plays. McCoy looks good but I’d like to see him under fire before I anoint him the second coming. Lovett? Let’s just hope FHSU hasn’t won the majority of its games for the season already. That would be sad. And redundant.

BRIANNE BONER

VOLLEYBALL: This happened last year, too, with Emporia State. You think you’ve got all their stars figured out … and then BOOM somebody else steps up. Testament to recruiting, right? Well our latest out-of-nowhere stud is 6-foot junior outside hitter Brianna Boner, who is the MIAA hitter of the week after leading the No. 3-ranked Hornets with 49 kills and 15 blocks at a weekend tournament. And do you remember Ting Liu? The reigning MIAA player of the year had 162 assists over that same weekend to take setter of the week honors. ESU is no joke.

And — let me cut this one off at the pass — I will NOT be posting any pictures of Hannah Carter on this blog anymore. Her eligibility’s up, freaks. Stop cyber-stalking homegirl.

So RC is short this week, but it was also sweet. That’s a good thing.

-TA

PS. I think this movie looks pretty sweet

Just a little down today … 88 is gone. Dude, I used to wear that number b/c of that guy. Sad day for Chiefs fans. KC management never ceases to amaze me.

Anyways …

We’re almost in the postseason for spring sports — strange to me that these sports exist in kind of a vacuum, it seems like, starting under the radar when nobody wants to think about anything but hoops. I think it makes for kind of an uphill climb to grab any of that audience in the spring, most of whom have some sort of sports-induced hangover from following their teams non-stop from when practices started in August. In other words, you gotta do something great to get that kind of pub in the spring. You know?

Roll tape:

BASEBALL

TYLER ROBBINS

Fort Hays State junior second baseman Tyler Robbins was the MIAA player of the week after some big outings for the Tigers, who have definitely helped their cause within the league by the strong showing this spring — I’m just saying, when you go from one league to another, you put yourself under a microscope because everybody wants to see if you’re going to be competitive or not, if you’ll help their profile. In some sports, FHSU falls short. In others they don’t. Now fifth place anywhere isn’t going to set the world on fire, but it shows they can be competitive in baseball. FHSU went 4-0 last week and Robbins was 10-of-17 hitting (.588) with 6 RBI and six runs. The Cherry Creek (Colo.) product spent a couple of years at Garden City CC, if you need him. Kansas Wesleyan catcher Brian Burke and KWU pitcher Dale Harder swept KCAC honors.

SOFTBALL

MIRANDA CAMPBELL

Emporia State is still in the hunt to finish second in the MIAA standings — they only trail Missouri Western by a game — and a big part of that success is 5-foot-3 third baseman Miranda Campbell. I put her height in there because I wanted to follow it with some catchy phrase — “packs a punch for her size” … “greatness in a tiny package” … “so don’t underestimate her”??? Nothing works. So how about she’s just …. really good! The Hornets went 5-1 last week and Campbell absolutely killed it — she hit .500 (8-for-16) with a homer, 8 RBI and seven runs. She missed the cycle by a single against Newman, too, going 5-for-5. Nice. Ottawa took home both KCAC honors with Scranton product Ashley Mundy your position player and Ashley Renaldi as your pitcher.

Here’s how the rest of your KCAC shook out …

GOLF: Jack Hiscock, Bethany

TRACK: Aric Cherry, Southwestern (Men); Ericka Joiner, Southwestern (Women)

FIELD: Max Brown, Ottawa (Men); Courtney Harris, Ottawa (women)

And on that note, I’m out.

And here’s this vid, just because I thought it was pretty damn awesome:

Is it? This weather? This no golfing, no fun, no lazy days on a patio rut we’re stuck in? Wait, wait, wait … I’m sorry. HIBBIDY HOO WHERES MY PUTTER MA?)

Anyways. Here’s Roll Call, and FYI Wichitan Megan VinZant had a big week for Friends:

BASEBALL

TRENT BIERMAN

HEARTLAND: Newman catcher Trent Bierman did pretty well by himself in two wins over Incarnate Word this week, going 7 for 13 with three doubles and five runs to grab Heartland Conference player of the week honors. The Jets travel to play Lincoln (Mo.) starting Friday.

KCAC: Kansas Wesleyan senior outfielder Brandon Mathes took co-KCAC player of the week honors after the Mustang, Okla., native went 12 for 18 this week … and his most impressive outing was in a loss to Wichita State where he went 4 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI. Nice. He shared the award with Tabor’s Paul Bridenbaugh. KWU’s Brian Dobyns was the pitcher of the week.

SOFTBALL

KASHILIA YOUNG

Welcome to the home run-friendly part of Roll Call. KCAC co-player of the week Megan VinZant, a senior shortstop from Kapaun, went 9 for 12 in four games for Friends last week, hitting 2 doubles, 3 homers and putting 11 RBIs in the books. As for Cowley College sophomore Kashilia Young … how’s 32 home runs last year (first in the nation) and 17 so far this year (2nd so far)? PING (hear that?) PING!!!! Bethany’s Jacquelyn Hernandez shared honors with VinZant while Bethany’s Stephanie Taylor and Sterling’s Jaime Quick were co-pitchers of the week in the KCAC.

TRACK & FIELD

MIAA. Bryan Haynes. Fort Hayes State. Pitt State meet. 1st in the 100. 1st in the 200. What more can I say?

Emporia State’s Josh Honeycutt put a stranglehold on field athlete honors, posting a school-record in the triple jump — 53 feet, 9.25 inches — which qualified him for the NCAA DII nationals and was the 14th best jump in the world so far this year.

Southwestern sprinter Collon Siler was the track athlete of the week in the KCAC and teammate Erica Joiner took women’s honors. Southwestern javelin thrower Andy Baron was the field POW as was Ottawa’s Courtney Harris. Yes, Southwestern is good.

GOLF

MATT EWALD

Washburn’s Matt Ewald is nice on a golf course. Dude went down to the Northern Alabama Classic, only got to play two rounds and took home medalist honors by shooting 1-over in really bad weather. He’s not giving anybody else in the MIAA much breathing room right now … this is the third straight golfer of the week honor for Ewald. Ottawa’s Zach Kasletic and Amy Wolfe swept the KCAC awards.

TENNIS

Back to Newman, where Megan Lowe was the Heartland Conference player of the week. Lowe helped the Jets to an 8-1 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan with a win at No. 2 doubles and No. 2 singles.

That’s it. It’s raining. My advice? Go see this movie, it’ll cheer you up. I’m OUT.

MIAA: Just fifth in the MIAA, Fort Hays State isn’t exactly tearing things up this season. But Alex Harvey ain’t doing too bad.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound senior out of Maize High School transferred to FHSU after three seasons at Western Illinois and is having a nice season this year to cap off his collegiate career. He’s hitting .385, leads the Tigers in RBIs (38) and is tied for second in the MIAA in home runs with 7. He raked this week, hitting .429 with 2 HR, 10 RBI and five runs in a four-game series sweep of Southwest Baptist. That’s all after he went 0-for-2 in game 1.

KCAC: Ottawa CF Nate Radke was the position player of the week, and Ottawa’s Eric Cordell and KWU’s Brandon Mathes split pitcher of the week honors.

Big props to the Friends athletic department for having usable pics on their Web Site for the Falcons’ softball team. A small thing, but it helps.

And it also helps to have Amy Martinez on your team. The Wichita Northwest grad went 8 for 10 in three Friends victories this week for league POW honors, and the first-place Falcons extended their winning streak to 12 and improved to 24-5 overall and 4-0 in KCAC play. Teammate Brandi Leeker was the pitcher of the week for the KCAC, going 2-0 with 19 Ks in 11 innings.
