Why Skip Foster came back to Coffeyville

Skip Foster is back.

SKIP FOSTER: BACK IN THE DAY

He’ll be the new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Coffeyville Community College, where he was the head coach from 1989-2000 and won the 1990 NJCAA national title and played for the title in 1996. Foster also played at CCC for his father, Dick.

Here’s his full bio from CCC.

Foster has spent the last decade coaching in the Arena Football League and AFL2. He quit the AFL’s San Jose franchise in May, in mid-season after a spat with the team’s owner and realizing that the newly revamped AFL wasn’t quite like the old.

“The AFL shut down for a whole year in 2009 to restructure and see if it could come back with a viable product,” Foster said. “And in that process, it went from having really good-paying jobs to a point where you couldn’t really make a living.”

Foster has lived and worked in Coffeyville in the offseason since 2006, when he moved back with his wife, Gay, and two younger children. He’d been looking to get back into the college-coaching ranks or administration for several years, and when Coffeyville OC Kelton Copeland took a job at South Dakota last week, Foster jumped at the opportunity.

“I applied for the athletic director’s job at Neosho Community College and didn’t get it, and I’d talked to (Coffeyville coach) Darian Dulin back in January about possibly coming back,” Foster said. “Coffeyville’s a special place to me, and I’ve got a daughter who is going to be a freshman in high school and a son who is going to be in the sixth grade. The stability is important to me … it’s home.”

The Red Ravens have struggled the last couple of years … but last year’s meltdown was epic. Coffeyville climbed to as high as No. 3 in the country when almost 10,000 fans came out to Veterans Stadium to watch them host Butler last October in a No. 2 vs. No. 3 showdown. Coffeyville, 6-0 at the time, blew an early lead, lost, and didn’t win again the rest of the season. High-profile transfers Duron Carter (Ohio State) and Nu’Keese Richardson (Tennessee) turned out to be busts and Dulin ended the year on the hot seat. Adding Foster could add the stability the program needs … or simply usher Dulin out the door if he can’t get it together. Either way, they need to win. Upside is I doubt they’ll be picked higher than fourth, so there’s massive room for improvement.

Full disclosure: I played for Foster at CCC in 1996-1997 … the stories from which only make me feel like this dude:

What is Willie Lyles’ connection to the Jayhawk Conference?

WILLIE LYLES

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU has given the NCAA copies of material it received from recruiting service owner Willie Lyles and his Complete Scouting Services.
The school said in a news release Thursday that it paid $6,000 in December for printed information and DVDs of game footage and highlights of 32 California and Kansas junior college prospects eligible to sign national letters of intent in February. LSU also got footage of two players it hadn’t asked about, one from 2008, and 91 pages of largely outdated roster-type material from junior colleges in California and Kansas.
LSU is cooperating with the NCAA investigation, and several football coaches met with an NCAA official on campus last week.
The NCAA is looking into Oregon’s $25,000 payment to Lyles’ firm and his involvement in the recruitment of running back Lache Seastrunk of Temple, Texas.
The probe is focused on what exactly Oregon obtained from Lyles. In recent interviews, Lyles has said that he and the Ducks both knew he was selling access and influence with highly recruited players.

That’s an article that came out yesterday.

Obvious connection to KJCCC: It says  Lyles got paid by LSU to evaluate players in the Jayhawk Conference. LSU signed one player out of the Jayhawk last year – Butler CC quarterback Zach Mettenberger.

Obvious questions: Why wouldn’t LSU just contact Butler for game film and evaluations? Does Butler have dealings with Lyles?

I spoke with Butler coach Troy Morrell this afternoon.

First off, he’s never met Lyles.

“I hadn’t heard of him until a couple of days ago,” Morrell said. “Never met him, never had any contact with him. All I know of him is what people have told me. We have plenty of coaches that call us about players so we don’t need anybody outside of our program to place our kids at schools. We’ve always done a good job of finding places for our kids to play.”

The Jayhawk Conference’s eight football teams use a file-sharing web site to exchange game film. Each team puts up its game film on the site and that’s that. If you’re the coach for Highland and you want to scout Hutch, you go to the site and download the game. It’s meant for the coaches in the league to use ONLY. You can’t buy a membership. Which means Lyles, in order to have accessed the film that he sold to LSU, would have had to obtain a password from one of the league’s coaches in order to access the game film. How Lyles broke it down from there (highlights, evals) is on him. Truth be told, it’s not hard to get access to the site. You just need one person to give you their password. Over the last couple of years, I’ve had access to the site for both football and basketball.

“The way it works is the site is supposed to be for the coaches to look at film, to scout the other teams. It’s really not supposed to be for anybody else,” Morrell said. “But it’s out there, and once you get a password to get on there’s nothing anybody can do. We put our film on there just like the other teams in the league do. We get calls from the recruiting services like Rivals and Scout all the time trying to get info on our kids. But the way I look at it is they’re trying to make money off of our kids, and we don’t need to be involved in that. Like I said, we have no problem getting our kids to schools. And if the schools want information about the kids, they can call us.”

To put it bluntly, Lyles is a bagman. A conduit between the schools and the recruits that can work outside of the system and funnel the cash and the influence where it needs to be dealt. He can get to the recruits outside of the parameters that NCAA coaches have to abide by. Just think of how ridiculous it is for coaches from DI schools to use this guy to evaluate players in the Jayhawk … why would you pay somebody thousands of dollars for what you could do for free?

Chance Lindley named women’s basketball coach at Nebraska-Omaha

CHANCE LINDLEY

Wichita native and Arizona assistant Chance Lindley has been named the women’s basketball coach at Nebraska-Omaha. A month ago, kind of a big deal. Now? A huge deal, because the Mavericks are now a Division I basketball program. They announced the hiring on Saturday – just last month UNO dropped a bombshell on the MIAA by jetting to the D1 Summit League and dropping football and wrestling.

I talked to Lindley on Saturday afternoon, and he was … psyched. Can’t blame him. He’s 35 and he’s reached a major career goal.

“I’m a midwest guy so getting to come back home is a huge thrill,” Lindley said. “Honestly, this did happen for me a little sooner than I thought it would … I’m fortunate to have moved up so quickly.”

“We had strong interest in this position from coaches around the nation, and there were many strong candidates,” said UNO AD Trev Alberts in a statement.  “In the end, we were impressed by Chance’s energy and passion as well as his proven track record as a head coach. We think he will be a significant asset in our transition to Division I.”

Lindley won a Region VI title at Barton CC in 2008 and came there after winning a Class 3A state title at Collegiate in 2006. He told me he’s going to aggressively pursue Jayhawk Conference and Wichita-area recruits. With that kind of background here and a Division I program to sell … he could make life hard on the three in-state schools pretty quickly.

Saturday, his phone was ringing off the hook with calls from well-wishers.

“It’s an exciting time,” Lindley said. “And it’s cool for me that people back home, where I grew up, get to hear about this and know what I’m doing. That’s huge for me.”

Butler CC forward Andre Ingram signs with Minnesota

ANDRE INGRAM

Big day at Butler Community College as men’s forward Andre Ingram signed a letter of intent to play for Minnesota and Tubby Smith. Even better? The 6-foot-7, 235-pound  sophomore is from Minneapolis.

“It’s just amazing to think that I get to go home,” Ingram said. “I went to visit the campus and was just blown away by how nice everything was, and my family has never been able to watch me play the last two years but they’re going to now.”

And what did Smith tell him?

“He said he thought the way I played fit their system  and he thought I could make an impact,” Ingram said. “He’s definitely a hard person to say ‘no’ to.”

This marks the second year in a row that the Grizzlies and coach Mike Bargen have sent a forward to a high-major school, with Ingram following Caleb Walker, the Region VI player of the year who signed with Nebraska last year and had a nice season for the Huskers, who just missed out on the NCAA Tournament.

“We’re awfully excited for Andre to get the opportunity to play in the Big Ten, to get to got home,” Bargen said. “I’m not sure he understood what college basketball was all about, about the hard work it took to succeed when he first came here. He’s a different person now than he was then though … you could see the change.”

Coach Eck is the man

LIVE scoring updates from Region VI finals

Final day at Koch Arena – today we’ve got the Region VI finals for both the men and women with the region’s lone bids for the national tournament on the line. Lots of good memories of going to these finals at Levitt Arena when I was a kid.

WOMEN

Cloud 46, Hutchinson 45 FINAL Cloud led 24-21 at halftime. Klara Wischer hits 1 of 2 free throws with 52 seconds left for the win. Cloud coach Brett Erkenbrack wins first Region VI title since 2001, when he also won national title. NJCAA women’s tourney begins March 15 in Salina.

MEN

Coffeyville 73, Seward 69 FINAL Coffeyville led 25-24 at halftime.

LIVE scoring updates: Region VI semifinals

Day 3 at Koch Arena … Region VI men’s and women’s semifinals on tap today. Expecting to see an influx of 4-year schools descending today for the semifinals. I’ve been told West Virginia coach Bob Huggins will be here at 5 p.m. (UPDATE: Huggins didn’t come, but sent assistant coach Erik Martin) to watch Seward guard Jeremy Jones in his semifinal game against Cowley. The matchup between Jones and Cowley guard Tyrus McGee, who is signed with Iowa State, should be fun to watch. Here’s my story on Hutch’s OT win over Independence last night.

I’ll update with scores as I get them …

WOMEN’S SEMIFINALS

Hutchinson 55, Independence 50 FINAL Hutchinson led 30-16 at halftime. Blue Dragons hit seven 3-pointers in the first half. Hutch earns spot in Region VI finals tomorrow night.

Cloud 66, Cowley 62 FINAL Cloud led 33-30 at half. Symone Murray missed 2 fts with 2.4 seconds left that would have tied it at 62-62.

Hutch vs. Cloud in Monday’s final … tips at 6 p.m.

MEN’S SEMIFINALS

Seward 71, Cowley 67 FINAL Cowley led 37-32 at halftime. Jones was amazing … scored game-winner on breakaway layup with 19 seconds left and led all scorers with 29 points.

Coffeyville 68, Hutchinson 58 FINAL CCC led 32-28 at halftime. Still no Region VI title for Steve Eck.

Seward-Coffeyville in tomorrow’s final – 8 p.m.

LIVE scoring updates: Region VI men’s quarterfinals

Great day of basketball ahead here at Koch Arena for the Region VI men’s quarterfinals. Big story in yesterday’s women’s quarterfinals was top-seeded Hutch pulling away late to top Butler.

Here’s today’s lineup and I’lll update as I get scores … most intriguing matchup to me is the final game, Garden-City Coffeyville:

Seward County 83, Kansas City Kansas 67 FINAL Seward led 39-36 at halftime.  Jeremy Jones leads Saints into semifinals with 26 points on 9 of 21 shooting.

Cowley 93, Allen 79 FINAL Cowley led 38-33 at halftime. Dominick Cornelius led Tigers with 23 points. Iowa State signee Tyrus McGee had 12 points … and no assists. Seward-Cowley in one semifinal tomorrow.

Hutchinson 88, Independence 84 FINAL, OT Hutch led 47-25 at halftime.

Coffeyville 71, Garden City 67 FINAL Coffeyville led 29-23 at halftime.

Seward-Cowley and Coffeyville-Hutch in tomorrow’s semifinals.

See y’all tomorrow. TA

CASTING CALL: Region VI coaches

My preview for the Region VI Tournament is coming out tomorrow. It will have everything you need to know about Jeremy Jones, Joe Mitchell, Tyrus McGee et. al

I’ve got that covered.

Today, let’s have some fun.

I can only assume this (extended) weekend’s games are going to be so incredible, so magnificent, that Hollywood will be forced to make a film about it someday. That being said, here’s a few ideas for when Spielberg comes calling …

Anthony Hopkins as Hutchinson coach Steve Eck Can’t you just see Sir Anthony slipping on a sweater vest, some lightweight reading glasses and going to work to beat Pratt in mid-January? He’d have to drop some lbs. to play Eck, but it could be done. If we can’t get him we’ll take: Woody Allen

Christian Bale as Cowley coach Tommy DeSalmeSince DeSalme looks so much younger, I had to cast age-appropriate. Also, there’s something about DeSalme where you always think he might … just … snap on you! If we can’t get him we’ll take: Justin Bieber

Daniel Day-Lewis as Seward County coach Bryan Zollinger If Day-Lewis was willing to spend three years as an apprentice to a shoe cobbler to prepare for a role, then living in Liberal will be a breeze. If we can’t get him we’ll take: Bryan Cranston

Clint Eastwood as Coffeyville coach Jay HerkelmanThe old, wily veteran. Won’t have the height of Herkelman, who I’m guessing is about 6-foot-7, but he’ll have the gravitas. If we can’t get him we’ll take: Rutger Hauer

Nicolas Cage as Garden City coach Kris Baumann Cage will have to shave his head. Danny McBride made a late run to get this role, but Cage has that Oscar on the shelf. If we can’t get him we’ll take: Will Smith

I’m out. See you at Koch. TA

What’s wrong with Hutch?

I’m starting to think they just don’t care. Don’t care about their legacy, don’t care about doing something great, don’t care about this season. It could be something else, of course, but since they’ve dealt with no major injuries … it’s not tough to draw conclusions.

And what else could we pull from the last month?

They start 17-0 and they rise to No. 1 in the country. And then, Jan. 12, they lost 81-80 to Butler, the start of an eight-game stretch that has seen them go 3-5 and drop to 6-4 in the Jayhawk West with no real shot at winning the league title. Monday’s 76-62 loss to Garden City isn’t exactly the low point, either, because the Busters are pretty good and I’m sure the WK came out in full force to get their yearly glimpse of Coach Eck. The low point might still be coming.

I talk to a lot of people about this team and from that, and what I’ve seen with my own eyes, I’m starting to paint a picture of what this year has been. And it’s ugly. It’s undisciplined. It’s what I think the people in Hutch were trying to get away from when they canned Ryan Swanson a couple of years ago.

Saying all that, I don’t know if you can count them out of the Region VI hunt. Too much talent. But time is running out.

And I’m out. -TA

PS.

Joe Mitchell is still the best guard in the Jayhawk.
