Just got into the office and found this press release in my email — Independence C.C. head football coach Lamar James died this weekend visiting family in Mound Bayou, Miss. James was 31. I’ve included the release, below, and James’ bio below that. Here’s an old link to his biography from his playing days at the University of Wyoming, where he was an all-Mountain West safety.

I just got off the phone with ICC athletic director Tammie Geldenhuys, who told me there’s going to be a funeral on Saturday in Mound Bayou and the school is going to have a “Celebration of Life” for Lamar on Dec. 1 after all the students get back from Thanksgiving break.

“Our biggest concerns are for his family right now,” Geldenhuys said. “And also for our ICC students and athletes. Lamar made an impact in the lives of a lot of people, and not just the players he coached.”

James is survived by his wife, Cindy, and two small children.

RELEASE:

INDEPENDENCE — The Independence Community College family is in tears this weekend following the sudden and shocking death of ICC head football coach Lamar James. He was 31.

ICC says James was visiting family in Mound Bayou, Miss., during the weekend when he was found early Saturday struggling for breath. He was transported to a hospital where he died upon arrival. No official cause of death has been determined.

Just three weeks ago, James concluded his first season as the ICC Pirate head football coach, guiding the Pirates to a 2-7 season.

More details about James’ death and funeral arrangement will be posted on this website as they become available.

Just got done writing my Friends volleyball story advancing tomorrow’s (Saturday) NAIA national playoff game at No. 14 Bellevue (Neb.) — kind of a cool side note to the whole goings-on is that the mothers of current Falcons Courtney McCune and Jessica Mullen played on the last Friends team to play at nationals … in 1984! Also came away impressed with how Friends coach Martin Ayin has built his team — mainly with local talent. Here’s the key when you recruit locally — you still need to get good local players to fill your roster. Ayin did that.

For Cowley — the Tigers are playing for the national title Saturday at Wisconsin Dells, Wisc., where they’ll take on Illinois Central in the championship match. It’s a 1 vs. 2 final — Cowley is 2 — and Ill. Central beat Cowley earlier this season in five games, although the Tigers are on a 19-match winning streak and beat Parkland 20-25, 25-20, 25-22, 19-25, 15-13 in the semifinals.

Very few surprises from the all-KCAC football team that came out today — I think the coaches who voted got this one right — and if you’ve read this blog you know that I’m not scared to disagree with the picks when all-Whatever teams come out, regardless of league or sport. But I like this one. A lot. Ottawa quarterback Ethan Haller was a no-brainer as the offensive player of the year and Bethel defensive lineman James McCartney repeated as defensive player of the year. McCartney was THE dominant d-lineman the last 2-3 years in the KCAC so big ups to him.

JAMES MCCARTNEY

I also came away with these gems: A) Ottawa loses pretty much everybody for next year, but could very well win a game or two in the playoffs this year BECAUSE THEY’RE LOADED and …. B) It’s McPherson & Friends and then everybody else when it comes to the KCAC title next year. Check this out — the Bulldogs return 16 all-KCAC players from this year’s team that just got an at-large bid for the playoffs. That’s 5 first-teamers, 6 second-teamers and 5 honorable mention selections. And most importantly, they bring back their QB in Shane Mascarenas. Friends brings back 14 all-league picks (2 1st team, 7 2nd team, 5 HM). That’s gonna be … nuts. Full lists below, typed up by yours truly:

My plate is full this evening, with Fort Scott pulling out the 13-12 Region VI win over Butler and the KCAC getting two bids to the NAIA playoffs with undefeated, No. 5 Ottawa hosting Hastings (Neb.) andNo. 12 McPherson traveling to MidAmerica Nazarene for the first playoff appearance in school history. That’s 87 years, if you’re counting. Here’s the full NAIA playoff schedule, if you’re interested.

I covered the Ottawa-Friends game yesterday and I’ll tell you what … Ottawa looked really, really good. Like they got up 42-0 in the first 16 minutes good. And as far as finally getting to see Ethan Haller play? Dude could start for most of the teams in the MIAA, no doubt. He’s that good. Their defense? Not so much. And as far as Friends — if they would have finished that comeback, as one of our page designers told me — that’s the kind of thing you could go 40 years as a sportswriter and never see. Just nuts.

So … Fort Scott. Brooks Seeley covered that game today and yes, it was cold, and yes, he whined the whole time (LOL) but he got to see a great one. And because No. 3 Blinn beat No. 1 Navarro on Sunday in the SW Region title game, that means, no matter what, the Greyhounds are gonna be No. 1 in the next poll and get to play for the national title at the Citizens Bank Bowl in Pittsburg on Dec. 6 — let’s just hope they can get the No. 2 team to come play them, whoever that may be (Likely Blinn). Couldn’t have set itself up any better for Fort Scott.

I’m out. TA.

PS. I’VE BEEN SAYING ALL YEAR … HE’S NICE!!!

So the Big Game of the Year is tomorrow, right here in Wichita.

And I’ll be there, live and in living color. The last game I went to at Friends … wasn’t pretty. The Falcons got stomped by Northwestern Oklahoma State in the first round of the NAIA playoffs last season … although Friends won the game by forfeit later. But that’s another story.

So about tomorrow … forget about the tiebreakers for a moment, because if Friends wins, they’re in the playoffs. Which means Ottawa and McPherson sweat it out for an at-large bid. But don’t kid yourself, because there’s no way three teams from the KCAC make the playoffs. I think if Ottawa and McPherson both win, the Bulldogs are still going to be forced to sweat it out a little. Point blank: the KCAC doesn’t have much national respect when it comes to the postseason.

On the field, a lot of people think this game is gonna be won or lost through the air, with the key matchup being Ottawa wide receivers Clarence Anderson and Corey Schultz vs. Friends defensive backs Quinn Cunningham and Cole Perry. I think if Friends can find a way to put pressure on All-Everything QB Ethan Haller, then the Falcons can win. If not … they can’t get into a shootout with Ottawa.

I think that’s about enough from me.

My prediction: 42-28 Ottawa.

See you there.

Just got off the phone with Mike Moore, who resigned after 10 seasons as the Bethel football coach today. It’s a situation where Moore wants to spend more quality time with his family — he’s got kids that are 15, 13 and 11 — and something he said he’s been thinking about for awhile now. My take? Great coach — and a great hire for any area high school program, which would make sense because he’s going to keep his family in the community. And he wouldn’t have to be out recruiting, which eats up the biggest portion of your time in the offseason.

I’ve got a story about this in tomorrow’s Eagle, until then here’s the release from Bethel, including defensive coordinator Travis Graber being named the interim coach:

Bethel College head football coach resigns; interim coach named

NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – Mike Moore, Bethel College head football coach, has resigned effective Nov. 16, 2009.

“Mike has touched the lives of many young men during his tenure, and his leadership of the Bethel College football program will be greatly missed,” Diane Flickner, athletic director, said. “I sincerely appreciate the experience of working with Mike during the past 13 years and wish him the best as he pursues a new direction in his career.”

Coach Moore has just completed his 13th season on the Thresher football coaching staff and his 10th full season as head coach. Headed into his final game Saturday against Sterling College, Moore had a record of 2-7 for 2009 and a career record with the Threshers of 47-51.

Moore led the Threshers to a share of two out of the last four KCAC conference championships and coached two KCAC Offensive Players of the Year, two KCAC Defensive Players of the Year, five KCAC Special Teams Players of the year and one KCAC Conference Player of the Year. In 2000, he was named KCAC Coach of the Year by his peers and was one of 10 finalists for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Coach of the Year. He received Coach of the Year honors again following the 2006 season, during which the Threshers earned a first-round NAIA playoff spot, Bethel’s first post-season bid since 1984.

During his tenure as Threshers coach, Moore coached 22 NAIA Scholar-Athlete All-Americans and nine NAIA All-Americans, including two First Team NAIA All-Americans. Two of Moore’s players have been named to the prestigious AFCA Good Works Team. Before becoming head coach, Moore served as Thresher defensive coordinator from 1997-99.

Moore began his coaching career at McPherson High School and spent one season at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He played at Dodge City Community College (1987-88) and at Kansas State University.

“Football is an important part of our athletic program, and I appreciate the contribution Mike has made to its development,” John Sheriff, interim president, said. “We are committed to continuing to build a strong football program in the context of strengthening the college as a whole.”
My family and I would like to extend our thanks to the Bethel College community, as well as to the Bethel College athletic department, for the past 13 years,” Moore said. “It is with great thought and prayer that we have come to the conclusion that it is time for me to move on in my career.
“I have had the opportunity to work for and beside many great men and women,” he continued, “and to all those that offered support and prayers, I want to personally thank you. This was a very difficult decision for me but one that I feel like is in the best interests of me, my family and Bethel College football.

“Once again I want to thank Bethel College for taking a chance on me 10 years ago when I was offered the head coaching job. It has been a wonderful experience and one that I will cherish.”

A committee has been convened to conduct a search and hire a head coach. Travis Graber, defensive coordinator, has been appointed interim coach.

Coach Graber has completed his ninth year on the Thresher coaching staff, his fifth as the defensive coordinator. He also serves as recruiting coordinator for the Thresher football program. At Bethel, Graber has coached 21 players to All-Conference honors. In 2007, his defensive unit had 10 players named to All-KCAC teams. Safety Brandon Kaufman was selected a 1st Team NAIA All-American. Before joining the Thresher coaching staff, Graber coached at Lawrence High School and at Wamego High School.

“Travis’ in-depth knowledge of the Bethel football program, current team members and recruits provides him with solid footing to lead the team through this transitional period,” Flickner said.

Just got this in — looks like Washburn senior linebacker Zach Watkins capped off his career without another playoff appearance (they got robbed, yes, but let’s move on) but with MIAA defensive player of the year honors and a third-straight first-team nod. NW Missouri RB LaRon Council was named the MIAA off. player, and that’s well-deserved. Watkins unseated incumbent def. POY Myles Burnsides for top dog, also. The NW Missouri safety was still a first-team pick. And might they be together on the first-team All-American roster …

Also, Fort Hays State DB/KR/PR CJ Lovett was a first-team pick as the return man — it couldn’t have been anybody else — but I’m a little surprised at his second team DB selection. Thought he was a first-team lock. Watkins had two teammates join him on the first team in DE Eric Lawrence and freshman DB Pierre Desir.

NW Missouri’s Blake Bolles was your toss-up first-team QB pick — don’t kid yourself that this could have gone to either Bolles, Washburn’s Dane Simoneau or Fort Hays State’s Mike Garrison. I think if either Simoneau or Garrison (co-2nd team picks) had been able to gut out another MIAA win it would have been theirs. But to the victor go the spoils.

My thoughts? Really liking these teams.
MIAA Announces 2009 All-Conference Football Team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Nine members of Northwest Missouri’s 2009 MIAA Football Championship team earned spots on the All-MIAA First Team to headline the all-conference team released by the league office Tuesday. The selections were made by the league’s 10 head coaches, and coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players.

Northwest Missouri running back LaRon Council was named the 2009 MIAA Offensive Player of the Year after leading the league in rushing for the second consecutive year with 1,202 yards and 16 touchdowns. The senior from Kansas City, Mo., will finish his career with two All-MIAA First Team honors to go with his offensive player of the year award.

Washburn linebacker Zach Watkins caps off a tremendous career by being selected as the 2009 MIAA Defensive Player of the Year. The senior from Independence, Mo., was also named All-MIAA First Team for the third consecutive season. Watkins led the league in tackles with 108, the fourth consecutive season in which he eclipsed the 100-tackle mark.

Nebraska-Omaha running back Levi Terrell is the 2009 MIAA Freshman of the Year after a spectacular season in which he rushed for 1,098 yards and seven touchdowns in just seven games, 156.9 yards per contest. The De Soto, Mo., product was also named to the All-MIAA First Team.

Northwest Missouri head coach Mel Tjeerdsma was named 2009 MIAA Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive season and 11th time overall after guiding the Bearcats to their fourth-straight undefeated conference season and MIAA title. Northwest is currently on a 37-game conference winning streak, the second-longest streak in MIAA history behind the 41-game streak put together by the Bearcats from 1997-2001, which was also under the supervision of Tjeerdsma.

Nebraska-Omaha had the second-most first team honorees with five, followed by Central Missouri and Washburn with three apiece, Fort Hays State and Missouri Western with two each and Truman with one.

Northwest Missouri earned a first-round bye in the 2009 NCAA Division II Playoffs and awaits the winner of Abilene Christian and Midwestern State in the second round Nov. 21 in Maryville, Mo. Nebraska-Omaha will take on West Texas A&M of the Lone Star Conference in the Kanza Bowl Dec. 5 in Topeka, Kan., and Missouri Western will play Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opponent Augustana (S.D.) in the Mineral Water Bowl Dec. 5 in Excelsior Springs, Mo.
