Two Newman University women’s basketball players have been suspended after their drug arrests earlier this month.

According to a Sedgwick County daily booking report, Kellindra Zackery and Alex Adekunle were both arrested Dec. 7 on suspicion of unlawful cultivation or distribution of a controlled substance — Zackery on four counts and Adekunle on three. Zackery was also arrested the next day for driving on a suspended license.

“Newman University officials are cooperating with the legal authorities and have immediately implemented the university’s internal disciplinary procedures which will fall in accordance with the outcome of the investigation,” said Newman director of communications Kelly Snedden. “Both individuals have been suspended from any activity with the team until further notice.

“As an institution that takes very seriously its mission and core values, we are disheartened by this news and are keeping the students and their families in our prayers.”

According to Sheri Boeken with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office, law enforcement authorities have yet to present evidence in the case to the DA to determine if charges will be brought or not.

“We’ve had some issues, that’s all I can say,” said Newman athletic director Vic Trilli, who referred further questions to Snedden.

Zackery is a 6-foot-1 senior forward from Newark, N.J., who transferred to Newman from Labette Community College, where she played for current Newman women’s coach Jamie Green. Zackery started her college career at Rutgers, then transferred to South Carolina before landing at Labette.

Adekunle is a 6-foot junior forward from Arlington, Texas, who transferred to Newman from Oral Roberts.
