ROMAR JONES
The All-KCAC teams dropped today, with Friends obviously the big winner on the men’s side and Sterling cleaning up (once again) on the women’s side. Friends forward Romar Jones was the men’s player of the year, which was a bit of a suprise (my money was on teammate Chris Jackson) and Friends coach Dale Faber was the coach of the year, which is rather ironic because he accepted the award at the beginning of the season, completely tongue-in-cheek. Fabrodomaus, anybody?
On the women’s side it was Sterling College coach Lonnie Kruse once again, deservedly, named coach of the year … and Sterling sophomore forward Cathryn Wiebe named player of the year. Friends senior forward Jessica Halsig, who transferred in from UMKC for her final season, was named newcomer of the year.
Congrats to all. Now, my beef. I’ll keep it short.
They shouldn’t put 10 players on the first team. There needs to be 5 on the first team, 5 on the second team and then 10 on honorable mention. Looking at both first teams, it is pretty obvious to me who the best five are on each– for men and women. It makes the first-team selections seem watered-down.
On the flip side of this, I give the KCAC major props for making sure they include an all-defensive team and all-freshmen team. Not every league does that, and I appreciate the extra time the coaches take to pick those teams.
On a side note, the KCAC semifinals are tomorrow but I won’t be blogging about them because … I’M COVERING THE WSU MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME!!! I’ll be on Shockwaves doing pre-game and in-game updates … wish me luck. I’ll pop back in Sunday to take a look at Monday and Tuesday’s KCAC finals.
