Woe to be a McPherson Bulldog right now … not fun.
The MC men’s team lost to No. 7 seed Saint Mary at home on Thursday night and are now forced to cheer their hearts out for Friends. While I have no stake in who wins or loses, I feel like the KCAC Tournament becomes a whole lot more interesting in years where we know it’s not going to be 1 vs. 2 in the finals simply for the reason that when that’s the case, well, the game loses some of its panache. The battles are fierce — I’m not saying it takes an edge off the competition … but the stakes are definitely lowered.
Here’s the matchups for Saturday — men’s and women’s — plus my predictions and picks.
Both games 7 p.m. at higher seed
No. 5 Southwestern (13-16) vs. No. 1 Friends (23-6) — Friends gets a tough test in the semis against a Southwestern team that had to scrap its original gameplan for the season when league player of the year candidate David King — 6-foot-11, 270-pound center David King, that is — missed the season with an injury. Friends just has too many guards for anybody to keep up with them … they just come at you in waves. Prediction: Friends 70, Southwestern 60.
No. 3 Bethany (17-12) vs. No. 6 Saint Mary (17-13)
Both games 2 p.m. at higher seed
No. 5 Friends (15-14) vs. No. 1 Sterling 24-4) — It would be one of the biggest upsets in recent memory if Friends were to pull this road upset at Sterling, where I can honestly say I’ve been to games where it was packed for the women’s tip, but the men’s game was half full. AKA Warrior fans do not mess around when it comes to their women’s hoops team, who seem to be the toast of the school year in and year out. Prediction: Sterling 60, Friends 40
No. 3 Southwestern (21-8) vs. No. 2 Kansas Wesleyan (22-6)
Oh, and if you’re on Twitter and you’re not follwing @WhitlockJason, you should be. Word to the wise, though: Don’t take him too seriously. He’s a jokester and more often than not he’s messing with people. So don’t forget your sense of humor, okay? Also the guy has more beefs than Tupac and Biggie put together. See: Deadspin, ESPN, Rick Reilly et. al.
