It’s never too late for Roll Call/Let’s look ahead

WHERE'S MY ROLL CALL, PRIVATE ADAME?!?!?!?

WHERE'S MY ROLL CALL, PRIVATE ADAME?!?!?!?

It’s never too late in the week for Roll Call, right? Of course not. Put it off a little bit because, like I said, I wanted to make sure everybody got in, then I went out of town, then my dog ate my homework … whatever. So let’s make this a Roll Call/Let’s look ahead post.

Here we go:

MIAA

KATE HAMPSON

KATE HAMPSON

Our fair state got blanked on the football side of things, which wasn’t really a surprise considering the big showdown between NW Missouri and Missouri Western last Saturday (NWMSU won), but we swept in volleyball as Emporia State’s Arica Shepard was the hitter of the week and Washburn’s Kate Hampson was the setter of the week. BTW, they play next Friday. That might be kind of exciting. As far as football this weekend … I’m pretty interested in the goings on down in Pittsburg, although I think they’ll get an easy win, but I’m really interested in seeing how Washburn does at Nebraska-Omaha.

NEWMAN

MELISSA ORTIZ

MELISSA ORTIZ

Newman gets kind of forgotten during the fall sports, because, well, they don’t have football. And their volleyball team isn’t very good. But what they do have is one of the best women’s cross country runners in the country in senior Melissa Ortiz, a Wichita West product. How good is Ortiz? She finished third at the Oklahoma State Jamboree last week to win Heartland Conference runner of the week honors. Fellow Jet Austin Hunt was the men’s HC runner of the week.

KCAC

I’m just gonna put a list of the honorees below because, well, the thing I really want to talk about is the Friends football team. Sorry. The winners are down there and they did a good job, I’m sure.

So Friends … I didn’t realize until today, that after their opening-game debacle against McPherson, they’ve won three straight games against three straight winless teams. That’s right. Southwestern, Tabor and Bethel. Now I don’t think Bethel is a bad football team, Southwestern and Tabor definitely are, but not the Threshers. But I don’t think that matters for Friends. I do think Bethany is going to beat Bethel this weekend and then Southwestern for sure the weekend after that. That means on Oct. 24 we’ll get ranked Friends vs. ranked and undefeated Bethany in Lindsborg. I saw that one coming all the way, didn’t you?

Oh … and I’m really feeling the new KCAC INSIDER online show. Check it out if you’ve got a shot. And who is Coleman Swierc, anyways? Anybody know?

FOOTBALL: offensive, QB Steven Baker, Bethany; defensive, LB Jeff Paulson, McPherson; special teams, P/K Michael Cebold, Ottawa . VOLLEYBALL: hitter, Tina Frick, Tabor; setter, Mandi Phillips. Tabor (AGAIN); libero/defense Kelsey Deerinwater, Sterling. MEN’S SOCCER: offense, MF Jose Garay, KWU; defense, GK Diego Millan, KWU. WOMEN’S SOCCER: offense, MF Alejandra Rojas, Southwestern; defense, D Heather Muilenburg, KWU. CROSS COUNTRY: men, Andrew Topham, Southwestern; women, Amy Pierson, Southwestern.

As far as the Jayhawk … Hutch plays at Coffeyville, and Butler has the week off.

What else do you need to know?

Adios, TA.
