Roll Call is light this week, but still packs a punch, starting with Washburn linebacker Zach Watkins, who is going to become the Ichabods all-time leading tackler at some point this season.

As far as who won what this weekend. .. Kansas Wesleyan managed to pull out a miracle with a Hail Mary against Bethel and Fort Hays State managed to beat Emporia State with Oktoberfest AND Homecoming swirling around them Out West. I guess you could call me easily distracted.

And please, do yourself a favor and click on the Watkins link above. I’m loving that hair. I’ll tell him when I talk to him on Wednesday. And pray he’s not mad.

Let’s go:

MIAA

FOOTBALL: When Washburn needed him most, Watkins was there, piling up 13 tackles — two for loss — and forcing a fumble in Washburn’s 36-21 win over No. 11 Central Missouri on Saturday in Topeka. The MIAA defensive player of the week’s big play helped vault The Ichabods back into the national rankings at No. 17. They get Fort Hays in Top City on Saturday.

KCAC

FOOTBALL: The NE corner of the state dominated this week’s awards, with No. 11 Ottawa grabbing the defensive player of the week in senior linebacker Ross Diehl and special teams kudos to Jarvis Morehead-Reed for … blocking a field-goal attempt? Well, when you win 23-21, that matters, people. Saint Mary QB Daniel Robles lit up lowly Southwestern to take offensive honors.

MANDI PHILLIPS

MANDI PHILLIPS

VOLLEYBALL: Tabor sophomore setter Mandi Phillips — a Halstead product — has put the lockdown on the setter of the week award in the KCAC so far this season. She’s won 3 of 4 so far and did it again this week for the first-place Bluejays. Teammate Gina Hullet was the hitter of the week and Bethel libero Addison Wolf was the libero/def. specialist POW.

SOCCER: McPherson’s Armando Rodriguez was the offensive men’s player of the week … and there was no defensive hotshot. On the women’s side, Bethany’s Megan Zavier was the offensive player of the week with three goals for the first-place Swedes in three wins. Bethany goalie Sarah Garlock took defensive honors with three straight shutouts and homegirl hasn’t been scored on in 373 minutes.

CROSS COUNTRY: Friends sophomore Jordan Arnold won the Tabor Invitational with a time of 18:09 over a 5K course. Is that fast? Just playing.
