Sunflower Slate Q&A with Washburn LB Zach Watkins

ZACH WATKINS

ZACH WATKINS

I caught up with Washburn senior linebacker Zach Watkins on Wednesday afternoon and came away extremely impressed — and ready to dole out some serious Sunflower Slate karma.

Here’s the skinny on Watkins — the 6-foot, 235-pound linebacker from Independence, Mo. (hometown of Harry Truman) is only the second player in Washburn history to go over 400 tackles, with 403, and could break the career mark of 459 this season. He’s had 100 tackles in each of his first three seasons; 100 in 2006, 143 in 2007 and 119 in 2008 and has led the Ichabods to a No. 17 ranking and 4-1 record this season.

Dude didn’t really want to give himself too much credit — but that’s what we’re here for. Gotta love when your linebackers wanna talk more about their defensive line than themselves. And his pregame music? Killswitch Engage. The Ichabods have got Fort Hays State coming to town on Saturday in Topeka.

Here’s our talk:

Sunflower Slate: You’re in your final year at Washburn and closing in on a pretty lofty record in the career tackles mark. In the middle of all of it do you ever catch yourself thinking about your accomplishments?

Zach Watkins: I really haven’t because I’ve been so focused on trying to help this team win games and be a leader out on the field. I get so wrapped up in the day-to-day stuff that all the personal stuff … I just never think about it.

SS: Did you think you’d have this type of impact coming out of high school?

ZW: You can’t go into college football thinking you’re going to be the best player, but once I got on the field I felt like I could definitely make an impact. As the years progressed I feel like I’ve become more of a leader and a player that the other teams need to prepare for.

SS: You’ve been on some teams that have come really close to being great but couldn’t seem to quite get over the hump when it came to the heart of MIAA play. What is it about this group that you think is different?

ZW: My sophomore year we made the playoffs, but we do feel like we’ve fallen short a couple of times. We feel like we’ve got a special group this year … we’re excited about keeping up what we’ve started this season.

KILL THE QUARTERBACK. KILL EVERYBODY.

KILL THE QUARTERBACK. KILL EVERYBODY.

SS: We’ve all got the idea  — well at least I do — of the stereotypical middle linebacker who is kind of the frothing at the mouth, always ready for battle type of guy. Do you fit into that role? What are you like before games?

ZW: I feel like I’m pretty laid-back, and I’m not against pulling a prank … but when it comes to practice and to games I definitely am able to get that really intense focus and put everything else aside. I feel like I’m a hard-nosed player and to have any type of success I’ve got to be able to get into that mode. And it doesn’t hurt to have a great d-line.

SS: Nice. Giving the d-line props is never bad.

ZW: Without them I’m not going to get where I need to be. They play the way they do and it makes my job a lot easier.

SS: So what are you listening to before a game? Anything in particular?

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE

ZW: (Laughing) That’s easy. Killswitch Engage.

I show my age and have him repeat the name of the band several times.

SS: What about away from football? What do you do for fun?

ZW: Play a lot of basketball, a lot of golf. We’ve got a group of seniors who have been together for four or five years and we’re pretty close. Just typical college-kid stuff … anything competitive usually catches our attention.

SS: Are you any good at golf?

ZW: Consistent low 80s.

SS: Last question. Biggest hit ever? College, high school, pee-wee football … what’s the biggest?

ZW: Mo-Kan All-Star game, senior year of high school. Tight end came right across the middle.

SS: Thanks for doing our Q&A. Best of luck this year.

I’m out. TA

Roll Call

ZACH WATKINS (WU ATHLETICS PHOTO)

ZACH WATKINS (WU ATHLETICS PHOTO)

Roll Call is light this week, but still packs a punch, starting with Washburn linebacker Zach Watkins, who is going to become the Ichabods all-time leading tackler at some point this season.

As far as who won what this weekend. .. Kansas Wesleyan managed to pull out a miracle with a Hail Mary against Bethel and Fort Hays State managed to beat Emporia State with Oktoberfest AND Homecoming swirling around them Out West. I guess you could call me easily distracted.

And please, do yourself a favor and click on the Watkins link above. I’m loving that hair. I’ll tell him when I talk to him on Wednesday. And pray he’s not mad.

Let’s go:

Saturday’s scores

Sometimes you gotta take some lumps when you’re trying to get to the top of the heap. For some reason I thought Hutchinson had already taken all of theirs. Guess not. Fort Scott showed they’re no joke by steamrolling the No. 4 team in the country. Now the Blue Dragons get No. 4 Butler in Hutch. Could they bounce back so quickly? Not likely.

And Pittsburg State lost again. What’s going on down there?

Jayhawk Conference

No. 6 Fort Scott 31, No. 4 Hutchinson 0

No. 5 Butler 30, Coffeyville 14 (Butler’s moving up…)

Independence (2-1, 2-0) at Garden City (1-3, 0-2),

KCAC

No. 17 Friends 65, Tabor 17

Bethany 63, MacMurray 21 (QB Steven Baker — 329 yds. passing three tds)

No. 13 Ottawa 23, No. 22 Sterling 21 (Ottawa stays undefeated)

Saint Mary 49, Southwestern 7

Kansas Wesleyan 19, Bethel 14 (KWU deserves to be ranked after this)

MIAA

Washburn 36, No. 11 Central Missouri 21

No. 18 Missouri Western 45, Pittsburg State 40

Fort Hays State 40, Emporia State 20 (Fort Hays improves to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in MIAA play)

Roll Call, for the people

OTTAWA'S COREY SCHULTZ

OTTAWA'S COREY SCHULTZ

In what world do you throw for 587 yards and 3 TDs, lead your team to a come-from-behind win over another undefeated, ranked, opponent and not end up on Roll Call? The one where your receiver grabs 17 passes for 273 yards in the same game. These are good problems to have.

Away we go:

About Saturday’s games … Haller-lujah!

ETHAN HALLER

ETHAN HALLER

I might have made some smart-aleck comment earlier this week about how Ottawa quarterback Ethan Haller would need to throw for 600 yards to impress me … so Dude actually went out and tried to do it. Here’s a short recap of Saturday’s games, including EH’s 587-yard performance in the Braves’ 2-OT win over McPherson.

Looking at Saturday’s games

YOU BETTER NOT BE SKIPPING THESE PREVIEWS!!!

YOU BETTER NOT BE SKIPPING THESE PREVIEWS!!!

For tomorrow — it’s not the super-duper blowout round of games we had last weekend, but there’s still some nice matchups on tap. I get to dissect one apiece from each league for tomorrow’s print version, so here’s the expanded, Big Momma’s House upgrade for everybody in cyberspace:

Hutch RB Chris Anderson

CHRIS ANDERSON

CHRIS ANDERSON

So we knew Hutchinson C.C. running back Chris Anderson had a big game — 120 yards and 6 rushing TDs — in the No. 6 Blue Dragons’ rout of Highland on Saturday. He’s rolling in NJCAA Player of the Week honors because of that, it now appears as if seems like Hutch CC has a 1-2 running back combo of Anderson and Chris Clay, that, well … it might be hard to stop. Imagine getting in a game against those two … you spend half your time chasing the 5-foot-10, 170-pound Clay all over the place, then you spend the other half getting run over by Anderson, a Troy signee out of high school who’s clocking in at 5-10, 193. That’s called a long afternoon, and that’s why HCC leads the nation with 346.5 yards rushing per game. Somebody needs to buy that O-line some Count Chocula or some Buffalo Wild Wings.

Hutch should roll against Dodge City on Saturday — then it’s proving ground time with a 3-0 record, a top 10 ranking … and back-to-back games at No. 8 Fort Scott on Sept. 26 and then they get to host No. 5 Butler on Oct. 3. That might be a big game.

What else … it’s a beautiful day in Wichita.

ROLL CALL (I thought you’d be bigger)

Finally. A Roll Call we can really sink our teeth into.

Oh, and Bethany LB Marvin Barnes will be signing autographs in the lobby of The Wichita Eagle from now until you finish this sentence.

Enough with the fun and games:

McPherson did what?!?!?!

SHANE MASCARENAS

SHANE MASCARENAS

So yesterday was a furlough day for me — which means a day off and also means no checking e-mail, no nothing as far as work. So I get home circa 2 a.m. and I log onto good ole Kansas.com and … I probably re-read the score twice to make sure I wasn’t seeing things.

Yes, people, McPherson beat No. 9 Friends on Saturday night.

I knew it was going to be a little rocky for the Falcons with the transition to a new QB — but this one is on the defense and on the o-line, I think. Friends only ran for 67 yards. This is a team that always leads the conference in rushing and they got smoked. And the D? Holy cow. On paper this team looked really good. Still shocked.

As far as the Bulldogs, the win brought me back to a conversation I had with head coach Brian Ward at Media Day. We were going over their recruits and who they had coming back and I said something to the effect of “hey, you guys might sneak up on people,” and it seemed like it was all part of his bigger plan. Like no big deal. Like he was surprised more people didn’t think that. And now he’s got a star QB in Shane Mascarenas (338 yards, 4 Tds) and they’re ready to roll.

Remember, dynasties start with little seeds. Victories like this can be the catalyst for something … bigger. Do I think McPherson is going to run the table in the KCAC? No way. But if you say you know who is going to win the whole thing right now, well … like Joe Wilson said, YOU LIE.

(On that note — Wilson is a jerk. So is Kanye West. Being impolite never flies)

And as far as Pittsburg State … again? Really?

Benedictine’s Wilcox recovering

LARRY WILCOX

LARRY WILCOX

Longtime Benedictine football coach Larry Wilcox underwent quadruple bypass heart surgery last week in Kansas City and is already home and recovering — ahead of schedule — which is pretty incredible. Assistant coach Charlie Gartenmayer led the Ravens to a 24-7 win over William Jewell in the season opener last Saturday. Benedictine hosts Evangel on Saturday.

Here’s a rundown of the facts on Coach Wilcox, who is nothing short of an institution in Atchison:

*Played football and graduated from Benedictine in 1972

*Hired as head coach at Benedictine in 1979

*Career record of 207-114

*Fifth coach to earn 200 wins at NAIA level and is the sixth-winningest coach in NAIA history (WOW)

*Heart of America coach of the year four times, five HOA titles.

*11 NAIA playoff appearances, including eight straight from 1996-2003

*Contributed entire 2004 salary to complete the expansion of the Amino Center, where the football offices and weight room are located.

*And there’s this … when the Ravens play, they do it at Larry Wilcox Stadium.

Get well soon, CW.
