Quick hits: Butler rises, Hutch falls and some KCAC stuff

CALEB WALKER -- AS ADVERTISED

I’m not surprised the Butler men beat Hutch … okay maybe a little surprised. What blows me away is that Hutch’s Darius Johnson-Odom was held to six points. SIX POINTS! Dude was leading the Jayhawk in scoring. And they lost by 26? And that’s the team that was picked to win the west? My guy at the game said the Blue Dragons seemed disinterested in this one. Hutch underperformed last year with uber-rapper/point guard/Jayhawk POY/”The Solution” Bobby Maze, who is now at Tennessee, and Ken Bowman (who signed with Maryland but isn’t on their roster) and a loss like this … not a good sign of things to come. But props to Hutch native Caleb Walker for locking down DJO and hitting for 29. Not bad when he’d only scored 38 points so far this season before the Blue Dragons came to town.

One more quibble about the Jayhawk … it’s the player of the week selections. I have no problem with a player of the week for the East and the West. I think that’s legit. But it should just be one from each. This week’s men’s picks are a mess. Four players of the week?

KCAC

Friends finished ranked ninth in the final NAIA football poll — so congrats to the Falcons. And while the NAIA recognized Friends with the No. 9 spot — they incorrectly listed their record as 10-1. They actually went 11-0 after Northwestern Oklahoma State had to forfeit its playoff win because the school used ineligible players. Ottawa also finished in the top 25 at No. 20. And — I’m thinking this has to do with the forfeit — NWOSU was left out of the final poll, no votes, nothing.

-Ottawa’s David Birch was the NAIA DII player of the week. And Lost is my favorite TV show. And Eva Mendes is pretty. And the sky is blue.

Birch is the man, as I’ve said before.

-The Sterling men entered the NAIA DII rankings at No. 24, the Sterling women dropped from No. 6 to No. 7 following a loss to KWU, and the Coyotes were the big mover in the women’s poll, hopping from No. 21 to No. 16.

Just a quick hitter here — 133-pounder Isaac Wall finished first at the Hastings (Neb.) Quality Hotel Open over the weekend, going 4-0.

I think that’s about enough for right now … I’M OUT!
