LIBERAL – Hutchinson Community College volleyball coach Ronda Shirley earned milestone victory No. 300 at HCC as the Lady Dragons finished 1-2 on Friday at the OzFest/Seward County Invitational at Seward County’s Green House.
Shirley, already HCC’s career coaching leader in victories, got the milestone win in a dominant three-set sweep of Arizona Western. HCC downed Arizona Western 25-19, 25-19, 25-7.
The Lady Dragons weren’t able to enjoy the milestone victory long. HCC completed pool play with a pair of losses.
Midland defeated Hutchinson in four sets 25-23, 12-15, 25-18, 26-24 in the second match on Friday. Defending national champion Western Nebraska then swept Hutchinson 25-20, 25-19, 25-15 to close out the day.
It’s the third time this season that Hutchinson has lost to No. 1 Western Nebraska. The Lady Dragons are now 4-12 against nationally ranked competition. Midland College was receiving votes in this week’s national poll.
Hutchinson (16-13) will now play No. 15 Redlands in the first round of bracket play at 11 a.m. on Saturday. HCC will play a minimum of two matches on Saturday.
Now in her 12th season as a collegiate head coach, Shirley has 330 victories, with 30 coming at Brown Mackie College in 1997.
