Behind the scenes: Jack Crowder III

UPDATE: CROWDER SCORED 31 POINTS IN COWLEY’S WIN OVER COLORADO NORTHWESTERN FRIDAY NIGHT IN LIBERAL. THAT’S CALLED EAGLE KARMA, PEOPLE.

I’ve got an article in today’s paper on Cowley guard/forward Jack Crowder III, a Southeast product tearing it up for the No. 5-ranked Tigers and Steve Eck. I got to watch Crowder play last season at the Region VI tournament and he had a HUGE dunk in the semifinals — like caught everybody by surprise HUGE — and

CROWDER III

I’ve been curious about him since. Gotta love the way dude plays … always attacking. I also got to talk to Coach Eck … and found out he hates the Internet! And blogs. But not necessarily this blog, he made sure to point out, which I thought was nice of him because he’s definitely been mentioned on here before and will definitely be on in it again in the future. His reasons for not liking the internet? It gives people a green light to be vicious and say terrible things without any real accountability. Something we’d like to avoid here, of course.

FB SCORES UPDATE 10/25

Hutchinson 32, Independence 10 (Hutch RB La’Darrian Page goes past 1,000 yards)

See you at Adair Austin …

I’m stepping out of my features/blog/previews mode tomorrow … I’ll actually be covering a game!

It’s winless Southwestern at undefeated, No. 6-ranked Friends. I’m psyched, although I don’t think it’s going to be close. The Moundbuilders have really struggled the last five years. It seems like you can trace their downturn and Friends’ rise directly to Monty Lewis’s career path.

MONTY LEWIS (FRIENDS PHOTO)

MONTY LEWIS (FRIENDS PHOTO)

Since I haven’t got to see a KCAC game this season, I want to see if Friends has what it takes to win an NAIA playoff game. Don’t kid yourself, this is a conference that needs to get into that national spotlight and that is ultimately what the Falcons season is going to be judged on. Regular seasons are great and all … but if you want to be like the Carrolls and the St. Francises and the Georgetowns of the world … you got to do it when it counts. Which the KCAC hasn’t been able to do.

If you’re at Friends tomorrow hit me up in the press box and I’ll share some of my popcorn with you. Seriously. I’m not a selfish person. You can have some. Game time is 1:30 p.m.

Out,

TA

PS,

Ben, if you’re reading this, you’re more than welcome to come to the game.

Behind the scenes: Butler LB Jarett Wright

There’s a story in today’s paper about Butler linebacker Jarett Wright, who is having a breakout season for the No. 3-ranked Grizzlies.

I’m pretty proud of myself that I got Butler defensive coordinator Tim Schaffner to A) Actually call me back and B) Actually do an interview. Schaffner is notoriously press-shy and also … extremely intimidating. But dude called me back and was … eloquent. He had a lot to say and was rightfully proud of the middle linebacker position at Butler and how it has become kind of an “in-state” position for the Grizzlies. Trust me, if you can get a Kansas kid to fill this, maybe the most important spot on the defense, year-after-year with Division I-talent, well, you’re going to win a lot of championships. Oh, And his wife coaches the Butler spirit squad. Which is also cool.

Roll call: Best of the MIAA and KCAC

Pittsburg State, anybody?

Colleague Gary Karr and I talk state/juco stuff incessantly and can’t figure them out. They looked terrible in a loss to Northwest Missouri, their only loss. But against anybody else … they’re money. And it looks like they’re back on track. Be nice to see their defense actually shut somebody down some week, but it’s a little late for all that, right?

Lots of familiar faces in this week’s roll call, with another Schrag pulling another KCAC volleyball award and the Gorillas taking offensive and defensive MIAA honors.

Let’s roll:

IN THE CROSSHAIRS: KWU’s Preston McCorkle

Kansas Wesleyan running back Preston McCorkle is having another great season. Saturday, No. 7-ranked Friends and the top-ranked rushing defense in the KCAC will get a chance at shutting him down … with only No. 18 Bethel having held McCorkle under 100 yards this season when he ran for 61 yards in a season-opening loss. Mccorkle has run for 629 yards for 3-2 KWU this year and four touchdowns after finishing tied for the KCAC rushing title last season with Friends’ Trey Hightower at 1,014 yards. That they both ended up with that number is crazy to me. Almost as crazy as Hightower not returning to use up his last year of eligibility.

We put McCorkle in the crosshairs:

Volleyball madness is spreading

There is no shortage of potent volleyball matches and great storylines headed into the weekend, with the Wasbhurn-Emporia State tilt Friday in Topeka getting top billing.

ARICA

ARICA

Where to start with this one? Two top ten teams squaring off (Washburn is No. 9, ESU is No. 10)? The MIAA

ASHLEY

ASHLEY

title on the line? Or the sister vs. sister battle between Emporia State All-American hitter Arica Shepard and twin sister Ashley, the top hitter for Washburn?

I’ll take ‘em all.

The Hornets are on a 19-match winning streak, and are 8-0 in MIAA play. They’ve never won an MIAA title. Washburn’s two conference losses were on the road to ranked opponents Truman State (No. 12) and Central Missouri (No. 14). I’m otherwise occupied, otherwise I’d be up the Turnpike to see this one. Go if you can and let me know about it. Will all of Rossville be there? I hope so.

Braden Dragomir and Ryan Covey

Big props to Bethel football player Braden Dragomir and Sterling soccer player Ryan Covey for their national awards this week — Dragomir was named the NAIA special teams player of the week and Covey was the NAIA men’s soccer player of the week. Not bad work, fellas. Dragomir made one field-goal attempt (52 yards), made 5 of 5 PAT attempts, and had 6 kickoffs for 310 yards (long 70 yards). The 52-yard field goal set a new school record for the longest field goal made, breaking a nine-year-old record set back in 1999. Covey recorded a hat trick and two assists in Sterling’s 6-2 victory over Southwestern on Tuesday. Covey then again scored three goals in their 4-0 shutout over Bethel on Saturday. He now has scored thirteen goals and has five assists so far this season.
