Hutch VB and soccer into national polls

It wasn’t a very long absence, but the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team is back in the NJCAA rankings at No. 18. Hutch had a streak of 43 consecutive poll appearances snapped when they weren’t included in the 2008 preseason poll. They’re just 10-9 overall, but 5-0 in Jayhawk Conference play and take this into account: they’ve played 10 nationally ranked teams already. Coach Ronda Shirley looks like she has her team on the right track, but they have No. 14 Missouri-Western Plains and No. 8 San Jacinto waiting for them next week at the Bank of America Classic. Should be a good test and it looks like the ultra-rough scheduling is paying dividends in league play.

And on that note … the Hutch women’s soccer team broke into the NJCAA

rankings for the first time, ever, debuting at No. 15. Can’t believe they’ve never been ranked before, either. They won Region VI last year and have been in the regional title game the last two years … but better late than never, right? Two local products, freshman Vanessa Magana (Hutch) and freshman Michelle McElroy (Derby) are tearing it up for the Blue Dragons, with Magana tied for 17th nationally in goals scored and GK McElroy ninth in the nation with a .25 goals against average.

So at the end of all this my intention was to put a picture of Hutch coach Sammy Lane here, but went to look at his bio all I found was this.

Dude, that’s way better than a bio and a pic! Aloha, player!

I do not understand the big deal about these weak sports programs. These teams are not national powers.
Most high school teams are better than these teams.
The only reason these schools give aid to students to plays sports is so they can get students to their schools. What a joke!
