I’m calling this a combination of Wichita Eagle karma (the good kind) and, of course, winning a game over a ranked opponent. Hit the karma link, please. You’ll have a better day for it.
The Sterling football team broke into the NAIA Top 25 football poll at No. 25 this week, one of three KCAC teams ranked in the top 25 with Friends moving up from No. 8 to No. 7 and Bethel dropping to No. 20 after its loss to the Warriors. And, for the second week in a row, the KCAC produced the NAIA’s national defensive player of the week. Sterling’s Derrick Sullivan won it this week and last week it was Friends’ Jordan Highley.

Butler freshman forward Mikenna Greathouse set a school record with five goals in a win over Dodge City earlier this week, a very commendable accomplishment and much deserving of props from Sunflower Slate.
Here’s the release from Butler’s Matt Jacobs:

I’ve got a story in the Thursday edition of The Eagle on Friends quarterback Alex Melugin, a Wichita kid who is tearing it up for the Falcons this year.

Saturday’s football game between No. 5-ranked Butler and Coffeyville at Coffeyville will be televised on Kansas Now 22, the second game for the Grizzlies to be on T.V. this season. Now 22 did a great job with Butler’s game at Garden City a couple of weeks ago.
Here’s the release from the station:

Some people hate Mondays. I love them. Because they’re my Fridays and … it’s player of the week time!
I did this by conference last week, but this time I’m going to switch it up and try by sport. FYI, Bethel and Ottawa cleaned up in the KCAC awards, ESU volleyball player Ting Liu is a stud, and the Friends University Web Site definitely needs to throw some mug shots on there.
Here it goes:

As a lot of you already know, former Hutchinson Community College basketball player and Wichitan Cortez Barnes died in a car accident Sunday in Texas.
Barnes was a City League great who tore it up on the court wherever he went — including two years for the Blue Dragons, where his name still dots the record book. Current HCC women’s coach John Ontjes was a teammate when Barnes played in Hutch, and has some nice words about his former teammate in this release from Steve Carpenter, HCC Sports Information Director:

Just in from ESU-FHSU game Saturday:
EMPORIA — Emporia State scored on four of its five possessions in the first half and used ball control and a stingy defense on its way to 24-13 victory over Fort Hays State at Jones Field on Saturday.
Looks like Emporia quarterback Andre Sloan El ran for 72 yards and a touchdown and threw for 90 yards and a touchdown. Like I’ve said before, he’s hard to handle.

This just in, with stats compliments of Butler assistant A.D. Matt Jacobs.
Looks like the Grizzlies struggled early but pulled it out. Weird they played on a Friday.
Sixth-ranked Butler scored 21 points in the third quarter after trailing 8-6 at halftime for a 30-14 nonconference win over Air Force Prep in Colorado Springs on Friday. Quarterback Press Taylor threw his first two interceptions of the season for Butler (3-1 overall, 2-0 Jayhawk) in the first half. The Grizzlies bounced back from their halftime deficit with a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs by Tony Williams in the third quarter, the second coming after a 98-yard drive from the Grizzlies.

It wasn’t a very long absence, but the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team is back in the NJCAA rankings at No. 18. Hutch had a streak of 43 consecutive poll appearances snapped when they weren’t included in the 2008 preseason poll. They’re just 10-9 overall, but 5-0 in Jayhawk Conference play and take this into account: they’ve played 10 nationally ranked teams already. Coach Ronda Shirley looks like she has her team on the right track, but they have No. 14 Missouri-Western Plains and No. 8 San Jacinto waiting for them next week at the Bank of America Classic. Should be a good test and it looks like the ultra-rough scheduling is paying dividends in league play.
