Assessing the NCAA damage

A three-game losing streak, most seasons, is cause for Wichita State is start making NIT plans. That thinking, according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi need not apply in 2013 for the Shockers. Their work getting to 19-2 is providing a cushion, now that the Shockers are 19-5.

Lunardi, in an interview for the MVC Hoops Show, keeps WSU comfortably in his bracket projections, in the range of an No. 7 or No. 8 seed. He theorizes that the Shockers, after a surprisingly good non-conference performance, are finding a more realistic level.

“They still have good wins,” Lunardi said. “Everybody assumes the teams you are in competition with are never going to lose. But they lose, also. Maybe the water-level overall comes down, but your head is still above it.”

All of that, of course, assumes the Shockers get back to winning. He is correct to point out that nothing happens in a vacuum. There is plenty of time for teams to rise and fall before March and WSU is not the only team with issues.

Lunardi also thinks it is realistic to see the MVC with four NCAA bids, should WSU, Creighton or Indiana State fail to win the MVC Tournament.

The MVC Hoops Show can be heard on podcasts and at 6 a.m. Saturdays on 98.7-FM in Wichita.
