Dyricus Simms-Edwards, a junior, averaged 10.5 points and 3.3 rebounds last season. A sprained knee slowed him early, and he averaged 13.0 points and 3.6 rebounds over his final 21 games.

Q. Where is your favorite MVC road arena?

A. It’s got to be Wichita. That environment, it’s so loud. It’s unique, really, really unique. I want to hopefully get a win there this year. Read More »

Creighton senior Antoine Young earned second-team All-MVC honors last season. He led the MVC in assist-to-turnover ratio for the second straight season and averaged 13.6 points.

Q. Is the NBA lockout getting you down?

A. Obviously it is. NBA games get you through your studies at night and school. It’s definitely going to tremendously impact when I’m only seeing baseball, and maybe hockey, highlights that I don’t want to see.

Q. Which non-conference game are you most looking forward to?

A. San Diego State. Read More »

More from MVC media day

  • The Shockers got pictures taken in new Air Jordan gray jerseys. I think that’s a first for WSU. We’ve seen black, white and yellow. Never gray, as far as I know.
  • New Bradley coach Geno Ford isn’t surprised to be picked last for the first time since 1992. “I don’t think anybody that’s a basketball fan or a Bradley fan will be shocked by that,” Ford said. “That’s exactly where I assumed we will be. We’ve got to get better. It’s OK for (the players) to take offense. That’s good.” The Braves finished last in 2011 Read More »

Checking in with the Shockers

I’ve watch many Wichita State practices since 2005. Saturday’s was a first because it featured applause. Strange.

WSU’s coaching staff opened Koch Arena to around 25 paying customers, giving them access to a tour, practice and a q-and-a session with coach Gregg Marshall. Most of the fans wore Shocker gear. A few took notes. Read More »

Wrapping up Shocker fall baseball

If Shocker baseball fans could agree on any one thing, it would be their hope that the 2012 team can play defense more consistently than last season’s edition. Wichita State’s 2011 team committed 97 errors (most since 2001) and allowed 64 unearned runs. Even going back to 2009, WSU’s defense has been an issue. Read More »

Shocker strength and conditioning updates

Wichita State basketball players finished their preseason conditioning tests last week and strength and conditioning coach Kerry Rosenboom passed along some of the more significant results.

  • Toure Murry broke his own record (for Rosenboom’s 25 years as coach) with a time of 4:45 in the mile run. Read More »

Getting started for 2011-12 Shocker basketball

WSU senior Garrett Stutz

College basketball practice starts today (although everybody has been practicing in short bursts this fall).

Two stories stand out as WSU tips off:

  1. It’s the final ride for seniors Toure Murry, Garrett Stutz and David Kyles, the key pieces of coach Gregg Marshall’s first “real” Read More »

Elgin on MVC expansion

MVC commissioner Doug Elgin had more to say regarding Air Force in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch today. The talks with Air Force never got serious and MVC schools are happy with 10 teams, so expansion is not a hot topic around the conference office.

I think that’s good. The 10-team alignment is perfect for basketball. Unless you can add a school that definitely adds revenue, prestige and NCAA basketball bids, it’s risky to divide the automatic bid 11 or 12 ways instead of 10. Read More »

A brief Wichita State basketball pickup report

I stay away from taking pickup basketball too seriously because, well, because it’s pickup basketball.

So I’ll throw out these two observations from Thursday’s session with that disclaimer. File them away and we’ll see if they are relevant in January. Read More »
