WSU 8, CU 3 – Final
WSU coach Gene Stephenson confirmed Springer, Baez and Bennett will be able to play in Sunday’s game.
“It made a good point,” he said. “This is a team game. One thing we’ve always stressed here that anyone person could be done without. Today, we proved any three people can be done without.”
McKeever will pitch.
WSU 8, CU 3 – top 9th.
Tim Kelley starts the eighth with 105 pitches. There is activity in the bullpen. Hoch is among the Shockers warming up.
Ryan Jones enjoys an inning to remember. After the hustling play to score in top of the inning, he recorded all three outs in the bottom of the seventh. The first one was one for the highlight reel. He ran a long way, jumped for the ball and caught it while stumbling and crashing into the right-field wall. The next two were routine.
WSU 8, CU 3 – bottom 7th. Jones scores from second base on a wild pitch. The ball bounced away from the catcher and landed near the third-base dugout. Jones never stopped rounding third and scored with a headfirst slide, just ahead of the throw.
WSU 7, CU 3 – top 7th. Bascue drives in a run with a sac fly. Jones’ two-out double scores Coy. Pitching change. Lackovic in for Hellhake.
WSU 5, CU 3 – top 6th. Creighton gets a run on a fielders choice. It seems obvious Creighton has one hitter – Trever Adams – that worries WSU. Everybody else, the Shockers are fine with them hitting singles.
Blach out with Coy at second. Nihsen to face McKeever with two outs. McKeever grounds out.
WSU 5, CU 2 – Lassley hits a three-run homer to left, into the wind. Kevin Hall gets the gold star for starting the inning by singling on an 0-2 pitch.
2-all - Creighton scores a second unearned run in the second inning. WSU’s defense, rock-solid on Friday, is shaky today.
WSU 2, CU 1 - Bascue homers to right.
1-all. Coy with an opposite-field home run.
CU 1, WSU 0 – 2nd inning. A leadoff single turns into a run for the Jays.
Preston Springer, Travis Bennett and Will Baez are suspended for today’s game due to a violation of team rules. They spent the batting practice running from foul pole to foul pole.
WSU lineup – CF Hall, SS Grimes, C Lassley, 1B Coy, LF Bascue, RF Jones, DH McKeever, 3B Goro, 2B Davidson
CU lineup - SS Soto, 3B Swift, LF Adams, RF Roemmich, C Vitale, DH Thornburg, 1B Dike, 2B Staehely, CF Bowens
