- I’m getting some questions about WSU opening Intrust Bank Arena against Kansas State in January. WSU athletic director Eric Sexton addressed this earlier this month, saying that game was not a possibility because of the MVC schedule. WSU is looking into playing a conference game at the new arena in January. The Wildcats released their non-conference schedule Tuesday and some held out hope for a game in Wichita. Nope.
- The baseball draft hurts Missouri State. By stealing (for a month or two and maybe longer) a basketball player.
- MSU guard Nafis Ricks will be one of the key newcomers in the MVC. The Bears desperately need scoring and quickness in the backcourt.
- Illinois State loses a baseball player to the Cubs.
- Former UNI coach Rick Heller lands at Creighton. Glad to see him in the Valley. He did a nice job at a tough place to coach.
- UNI newcomer Marc Sonnen likes to play defense, which should make an already good defensive team better.
- Most of the Panther baseball players found new homes, including Travis Bennett at WSU.
- Former Shocker second baseman P.J. Forbes (best defender at that position?) is managing in the Pirates organization.
- Illinois State could really use a healthy Bobby Hill. Hill visited WSU as a high school senior and former Shocker coach Mark Turgeon thought he was a Big 12-quality athlete at that time. ISU’s non-conference schedule again appears to lack sizzle (with some dates to fill).
- SIU newcomer Tony Freeman, a transfer from Iowa, played on a team that went 7-0 in a tour of Turkey. Carlton Fay and Nick Evans also played on traveling teams this spring.
