Buffalo: Day after

  • Reggie Chamberlain looks good for a man with a concussion. Some of the other Shockers with a head injury look pale, shaky and out of it. I saw Reggie Thursday afternoon and he looks and sounds pretty good. He is fuzzy on the details of the game, which is not surprising. He is not sure if he will play Monday. I will be surprised. He may find the symptoms worsen in the next day or two.
  • Wednesday’s game reinforced how much emphasis MVC teams put on defense. Buffalo, even when it played aggressively on defense, didn’t disrupt WSU nearly as much as most Valley teams. Part of that is scouting. It’s not the whole story.
  • Another good effort by WSU’s bench. Hawkins, Kyles, Stutz, Chamberlain and Ellis all gave WSU a boost at times.
  • You can watch the Stanford post-game chatter here. The Cardinal scored 96 points, so it seems Stanford likes to run up and down. Note that Dawkins is the Anne and Tony Joseph Director of Men’s Basketball. No ordinary titles such as “coach” are used at Stanford.
  • Shockers did not practice Thursday.

Around the Valley

  • UNI is out. Two years in a row and the Valley goes winless in the NCAA Tournament with one bid. The pressure is on next season.
  • Illinois State’s overtime loss at Kansas State is Exhibit A for the why BCS schools don’t travel to play MVC schools. Jay Bilas and Digger Phelps should pay attention next time they start talking about the “eye test” and at-large bids. The MVC’s third-place team plays the Big 12 team that tied for fourth (and earned the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament) even on the road. Clock problems soured the final second. Tim Jankovich can commiserate with Gregg Marshall.
  • Osiris should study the case of Patrick O’Bryant before pondering the NBA. Eldridge sounds like he has a good read on the situation.
  • Stanford wins big.
  • Drake is out of the CIT.
  • Another Creighton comeback and the Bluejays survive in the NIT. They play Kentucky in Omaha on Monday. That’s a great deal, even if it is the NIT. WSU and CU can save a little face for the MVC on Monday.
  • Mark Turgeon is 3-0 in NCAA first-round games.
