Q&A with Philip Bowman of the Charleston Post and Courier

Philip Bowman of the Charleston (S.C.) Post and Courier will be the eyes of many Shocker fans this winter as he covers high school sports. WSU signee Kenny Manigault plays for Pinewood Prep in Summerville, about 26 miles from Charleston. Pinewood is ranked No. 17 in The National Prep Basketball Poll. Here is what Bowman says about Manigault, a 6-foot-4 guard. Read More »

Thursday at Koch Arena

Wichita State basketball coach Gregg Marshall is still battling a sinus condition. I always wonder what affect a coach’s health has on a team. It is one of those things that shouldn’t matter, but perhaps it does. Players, especially young players, take all kinds of cues from their coaches, probably ones they don’t even realize. Factor in WSU’s losses in Texas? Maybe. Maybe not. Read More »

WSU’s story of the year

Later this month, each Eagle sports reporter will pick the best story on their beat for 2008 and write about it as a way to end the year. It took me a few seconds to figure out the volleyball team’s unbeaten regular-season is the top candidate, although not without challengers. What is your pick? Let me know if missed something. Monday in Fort Worth

Texas Christian’s Daniel-Meyer Coliseum is a replica of Levitt Arena (and Koch Arena to a lesser degree) in many ways, down to the below-the-concourse restrooms. DMC is round with a domed roof that looks much like Levitt’s did. There is one tunnel behind a goal. The concrete stands are filled with wood seats – all chairback. There are two places on each end of the court where I bet drinking fountains once resided. Even the air vents look familiar. Read More »

Friday at Koch Arena

Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall talked mostly about his offense on Friday before practice. He pointed out the lack of practice time during a four-game stretch between Nov. 27-Dec. 3. The problems on offense are numerous. Bad shots. Bad passes. Lack of movement. Lack of execution. Marshall ticked off several examples of teammates missing open teammates with sloppy passes. Or of players taking ill-advised shots. Other than guard Clevin Hannah, coaches don’t know who is going to show up from game to game and score. Read More »

WSU at Texas Tech

Final: TT 72, WSU 69. Hannah missed the first, then banged the second off the rim. A Shocker (I think Clemente) tipped it out. Murry chased it down in the corner and got a pretty good look at a fallaway three. It hit the rim and bounced away. Read More »

Wednesday in Lubbock

Texas Tech, from what I’ve been told, is one of those rare schools where the women’s team outdraws the men. Tennessee (before Bruce Pearl), Missouri State (in the LB glory days) and Connecticut (maybe). Can’t think of many others. Thirty minutes before the game and there are few people in the United Spirit Arena. Perhaps they are organizing a “please stay” rally for football coach Mike Leach.

Around the MVC:

  • Todd Golden of the Terre Haute Tribune-Star takes on a message-board poster in the never-ending Internet battleground. Most of the time, I think it’s wise to let message boards be what they are – a place for fans to be fans. The problem is putting words on a forum viewed worldwide can hurt feelings. Not everybody sees message-board banter as harmless, especially when they or someone they know is the target of discussion by anonymous fans. Stay tuned for more. This issue isn’t going to fade away.
  • For the Sycamores, of more immediate importance is their 0-5 start. Indiana State is 0-5 for the sixth time and history says a winning record is a longshot. The schedule offers little relief with Louisville and Purdue coming up.
  • P’Allen Stinnett is back for the Jays.
  • SIU defeated Saint Louis.
