Wichita State sophomore Aaron Ellis provided last season’s cliff-hanger. After an inconsistent regular season, he broke out with a 19-point, 9-rebound effort in the MVC Tournament. Shocker fans spent the off-season wondering ‘what’s next?’ for Ellis. Practice starts tonight, and Ellis, a 6-foot-9 forward, can start answering that question.
Q. Who is the most improved teammate from last season?
A. Ramon (Clemente) – Strength-wise and also his outside jumper. Me and him actually worked a lot during the summer, shooting, and he’s really improved the elbow jumper and also the corner. It’s something he’s really worked on to get it into his game. I think people are going to notice that when the season starts.
Q. Who is the favorite to win the slam dunk contest at Shocker Madness?
A. I think probably Ramon is going to defend his title again.
Q. Is he still the best dunker on the team?
A. No, A.J. Hawkins is.
Q. What is the biggest difference between the team in 2007 entering practice and 2008 entering practice?
A. It’s pretty much the same, because no one knew what to expect last year, either. Everyone was really new to (coach) Marshall. This year, I kind of know what to expect. Some people don’t again. I think more than anything people are excited about it.
Q. What is the biggest difference for Aaron Ellis?
A. I would say mentally I’m stronger and more prepared. Last year, a lot of things, I was basically thrown into the fire. This year, I’m definitely experienced and know what coach is expecting and know what he wants to get done.
Q. Obama or McCain?
A. Do I have a favorite? Actually, no. I don’ t like one more than the other right now, just because of the simple fact that there’s really no substance. People can say something, but they until they actually do it we don’t have too much to go on.
