Ramon Clemente on the mend

Wichita State forward Ramon Clemente doesn’t want to slow down his summer workouts, even after Monday’s collapse during conditioning drills. The WSU training staff and coaches are of a different opinion. The good news is Clemente does not believe his health is in any serious jeopardy. He blames Monday’s episode on stress caused by family issues, not the workout running steps and ramps at Cessna Stadium. He said there is no history of problems.

“I’ve had a lot on my mind,” he said Tuesday “It wasn’t the workout at all. I was running strong.”

Clemente said he will have more tests for the next week or so. He is supposed to back off conditioning and basketball. That won’t be easy - he lifted Tuesday morning and doesn’t want to stop his training momentum.

“I might slow down,” he said.

Clemente passed out Monday afternoon and was taken by ambulance to Via Christi-St. Francis, where he was treated and released within a few hours. It was a scary scene at Cessna Stadium, as Clemente rested unconscious on the concrete ramp with teammates, coaches and trainers huddled around him. For now, Clemente thinks nothing is seriously wrong.

  • WSU junior A.J. Hawkins said he is about three weeks away from playing basketball. He is rehabbing from toe surgery. A dislocated toe caused him to miss practice time during the season, so the hope is surgery will stop the problem from cropping up again.
  • I have a call into former Shocker P.J. Couisnard to see how his time in the Orlando Summer League with the Bulls went. The word is he played in two games before a foot injury sidelined him. He made enough of an impression to get other teams interested. I don’t have any more details yet, but plan on talking to P.J. this week.
