WSU lands baseball recruit from Enid

WSU has its first oral commitment of the summer. Right-hander Tobin Mateychick, from Enid, Okla., says he is on board. Mateychick (6-foot-5, 180 pounds) recently went to the Perfect Game Showcase in Minneapolis, so he may turn into a guy who the Shockers will watch nervously on draft day next spring.

That stress is almost a year away. For now, the good news is the Shockers dipped into Oklahoma for what appears to be another top-level pitcher. Mateychick said he narrowed his choices to Arkansas and WSU and also looked at Arizona State. You can read more in Wednesday’s newspaper.

Bill Mayberry, his Legion coach, says Mateychick touches 93-94 mph with his fastball and throws a curve and a changeup.

“The changeup is a good pitch for him,” Mayberry said. “His fastball is better when it’s down, which is a good sign. That means the leverage is working right.”

It will be interesting to see where the rest of the summer takes recruiting. The Shockers, assuming this spring’s class suffers no more losses, appear to have plenty of pitching for the next season or two. Third base and second base appear to be two positions unclear in the immediate future. Catcher (with several players in the mix) and shortstop (where Dusty Coleman is scheduled to turn things over to Tyler Grimes in 2010) appear to be set for the near future.
