Democrats in the Wichita area got robocalls Thursday inviting them to come help kick off Barack Obama’s post-convention presidential campaign this weekend.
An Obama open house will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday in conjunction with the annual Demofest event at Wichita State University’s Hughes Metropolitan Complex, said Samatha Finke, Kansas field representative for the Obama campaign.
The campaign will be signing up and organizing volunteers to help the Obama campaign in the sprint to the Nov. 4 general election. Voter registration and absentee ballot applications will also be available, Finke said.
A variety of Obama merchandise will be on sale.
The keynote speakers for the Demofest are former congressman Jim Slattery and state Sen. Donald Betts. Slattery is running against incumbent Republican Sen. Pat Roberts while Betts is challenging incumbent U.S. Rep. Todd Tiahrt.
Although the events are at roughly the same time, those who attend the Obama open house also will be able to attend the Slattery and Betts speeches, Finke said.
The Obama open house and the Slattery/Betts rally at 4 p.m. are free and open to the public, said Jenny Davidson, spokeswoman for the state Democratic Party (and the voice on the robocalls).
The Hughes Metropolitan Complex is at the southeast corner of Oliver and 29th St. North.

Robo calls are this election cycle spam.
Nancy Boyda (D-KS) is the only KS candidate that has agreed to take a “do not robo call” pledge and not call voters registered on the National Political Do Not Contact Registry.
As I testified at the US. Senate these calls are an epidemic and are invading the privacy of All American Voters.
Our members are taking a stand and saying enough is enough at the National Political Do Not Contact Registry at StopPoliticalCalls.org.
Here is a quote from a member recently:
“I’m a shift worker, working variable shifts. I depend on my sleep to be able to do my job safely and efficiently. I’m a locomotive engineer. Imagine the disaster were I to fall asleep, operating a freight train carrying hazardous materials in your neighborhood, due to fatigue from being awoken in my middle of the night on a continuous basis during election season. Please stop..”
