NBC title game

Broncos win 2-1

Bases loaded after intentional walk. Matt Giller batting for the Broncos. Pitching change coming.

Broncos have runners at first and third with no outs. Kirk Walker bunted. Catcher Daniel Dellasega threw the ball into right field, allowing Wes Cunningham to get to third.

Extra innings. The Broncos put a runner on first with two outs. Anchorage pitcher D.J. Mauldin snared a liner that might have been trouble to end the inning.

Pilots retired in order. Going to the bottom of the ninth.

1-1, going to the ninth inning.

Game on at 10:47. Wichita State’s Cobey Guy is pitching for the Broncos. Now Guy is out. He got a strikeout, then gave up a single. Lefty Mike Nixon is relieving to face lefty hitter Jonathan Johnson.

The tarp is coming off at 10:30 p.m.

Rain delay at 9:47. The Broncos have a runner at second with two outs. Tarp is coming out.

El Dorado 1, Anchorage 1 – bottom of the sixth.  Ryan Gebhardt drives in a run with a single.

El Dorado 1, Anchorage 0 -top of the sixth. Broncos starter Jake Sabol has allowed two hits. Pilots starter Christian Bergman has allowed four.

El Dorado 1, Anchorage 0 - first inning. Kyle Tiernan hammers a pitch over the right-field wall. It’s the first homer of the tournament for the Broncos.

Friday at the NBC

Anchorage 13, Liberal 4 – Final. Anchorage vs. El Dorado in Saturday’s championship.

Anchorage 13, Liberal 4 - top 8th. Liberal’s defense falls apart to hand the Glacier Pilots an eight-run inning.

Anchorage 7, Liberal 4 - bottom seventh. Pilots can break this game open. Runners on second and third with one out.

Anchorage 6, Liberal 4 - bottom seventh. Gunnar Glad homers to left.

Anchorage 5, Liberal 4 - top seventh.

Liberal 4, Anchorage 4 - bottom of the fifth.

4-all in the fifth. The BeeJays have two runs in with two outs and two on.

Anchorage 4, Liberal 2 – Daniel Dellasega blasts a three-run homer to left to give the Pilots the lead in the fourth inning.

Liberal 2, Anchorage 1 - bottom third. Liberal’s Chad Comer drives in two runs with a single.

Thursday at the NBC

El Dorado 5, Hays 2 – Final. Broncos are in the title game. Anchorage plays the Santa Barbara-Liberal winner at 6 p.m., Friday.

El Dorado 5, Hays 2 - top ninth. The Broncos are three outs from the title game.

El Dorado 3, Hays 2 - Carl loses his no-hitter to a double by Matt Giller. Then things really got bad. Two throwing errors by shortstop Sean Wilson and one by catcher Ollie Goulder let the Broncos take a lead.

Hays 2, El Dorado 0 - bottom of the seventh. Carl, who has walked three, has not allowed a hit.

Hays 1, El Dorado 0 - fifth inning. Larks starter Eddie Carl hasn’t allowed a hit. Hays second baseman Jason Morriss homered, his first extra-base hit of the tournament.

Anchorage 7, Conejo 3 – final. Conejo eliminated.

Anchorage 7, Conejo 3 – top sixth

Anchorage 6, Conejo 3 - top fifth

Anchorage 5, Conejo 3 - top fourth. Miller, the No. 9 hitter, has three RBI for the Pilots.

Anchorage 4, Conejo 3 - bottom third

Anchorage 4, Conejo 1 - top third. The Glacier Pilots continue to score a lot of runs. They may be the best best to come out of the 1-loss teams to win the NBC. A single by No. 9 hitter Michael Miller got the big inning started, driving in two runs.

Conejo 1, Anchorage 0 - A home run by Ryan Delgado gives the Oaks the lead in the second inning. He has three home runs in the NBC, most of any player.

In my mind, this is the best night of the tournament. We’re down to six teams. The pretenders are gone. The teams that remain are usually good. Three games, which means there is an abundance of baseball, yet not too much. The goal is in sight.

We start with Anchorage vs. Conejo. Let’s hope tonight’s game are solid defensively. Wednesday night was, in some cases, embarrassing.

Wednesday at the NBC

El Dorado 4, Liberal 3 – Final. The Broncos are two wins away from the title as the NBC’s lone unbeaten. They play Hays on Thursday night. Liberal faces Santa Barbara.

Liberal 3, El Dorado 3 - top 7th. El Dorado’s Travis Whipple drives in two runs with a triple.

Liberal 3, El Dorado 0 - bottom 4th. Another bad defensive inning. Broncos shortstop Kyle Tiernan commits three errors – two throwing.

Hays 9, Crestwood 8 – Final

Crestwood 7, Hays 7 – top 9th. Horrid defense by both teams.

Crestwood 7, Hays 5 - top 8th

Crestwood 7, Hays 4 – top 7th

Crestwood 7, Hays 1 – bottom of the second. Three Larks errors help the Panthers scored four runs.

Crestwood 3, Hays 1 - top of the second.

Crestwood 3, Hays 0 – bottom of the first. The Panthers jump on Larks starter Chris Larsen with a double and a two-run triple.

Sunday at the NBC

El Dorado 6, Gunnison 1 – Final

El Dorado 6, Gunnison 1 - bottom of the eighth. Sabol ends a two-on, two-out threat with a pickoff.

El Dorado 5, Gunnison 1 - after six. Gunnison reliever Chase Jestice walks in a run before getting the final out. Broncos starter Jake Sabol is working on a one-hitter. He saved El Dorado’s first two games in the NBC.

Pitching change with ED up 4-1. The Broncos have the bases loaded with two outs in the sixth.

El Dorado 3, Gunnison 1 - bottom of the fifth.

El Dorado 2, Gunnison 0 - after one inning. Doubles by Wes Cunningham and Travis Whipple give the Broncos the lead.

Santa Barbara 10, Sedalia 0 – Run-rule win for the Foresters, the defending NBC champions. Kelley allows three hits and strikes out two in five innings.

Santa Barbara 10, Sedalia 0 - bottom of the eighth. The Foresters are three outs from a run-rule victory.

Santa Barbara 9, Sedalia 0 - bottom of five.

Santa Barbara 8, Sedalia 0 – After four. Run-rule looks like a possibility. Shoddy defense is killing the Bombers.

Santa Barbara 4, Sedalia 0 - bottom of the third. The Foresters add three runs on four hits, two off the pitcher’s body. Kelley looks like the pitcher who Shocker fans remembers. He is working fast, throwing strikes, changing speeds and moving the ball around.

Santa Barbara 1, Sedalia 0 - after one inning.

Scores from earlier today:

Anchorage 15, Orange County 4

Nevada 8, San Diego 1

Conejo 4, Seattle 3

Tonight:

Santa Barbara vs. Sedalia, 5 p.m.

Gunnson vs. El Dorado, 7:30 p.m.

WSU’s Tim Kelley will pitch for the Foresters.

Saturday’s NBC Tournament

BY TAYLOR ELDRIDGE

7:47 P.M. — Sorry for lack of updates. I watched the game with the ‘Round The Clockers out in right field. Derby won 10-0 in a complete domination. Run-ruled them in the 8th.

5:00 P.M. — Derby Twins and San Diego Force about ready to start off. I’ll be updating regularly, so keep checking in.

4:39 P.M. — I’ve been hard at work. Hays won 5-0. Kurt Wunderlich pitched amazingly. Complete game shutout, only five hits. Not bad. Now up the Derby Twins.

3:00 P.M. – Still writing. And still nothing has happened in the game. It’s 0-0 in the top of the 4th.

Friday’s NBC Tournament

by TAYLOR ELDRIDGE

8:15 P.M. — Still 6-5. This game reaching its fifth hour. Or so it seems…Top of 9th.

7:54 P.M. — Up here talking to a guy from Alaska. That’s exciting. It sounds like a fun place to live. Except the six months of darkness. But he is making it sound good. I’m thinking about it. Oh yeah, it’s still 6-5. Top of the 8th. Slowly crawling its way to a finish.

7:32 P.M. — A stir in the crowd awoken me, just in time to look up and see a Cornejo player smash a home run that easily cleared the 385-foot fence in left field. Probably the longest shot in the tournament. It’s 6-5 Cornejo now. Oh, the drama!

7:16 P.M. — Pitching change for Cornejo. Zzz. Just looked, all three games so far have lasted at least 2 and a half hours. That’s not good. Score update: Hays 5, Cornejo 3. Bottom 4th.

6:51 P.M. — Hays laying it on now. Four runs in the third inning and they have taken a 5-3 lead. Still only one out.

6:43 P.M. — Hays Larks and Cornejo Oaks are playing now in a game that I just can’t get into. Maybe because it’s I’m writing. Maybe because it’s a boring game. Or maybe because no Kansas players are playing. But anyway the Oaks are covering the Larks 3-2 in the top of the third inning. The crowd is pretty good for a game like this.

5:38 P.M. — Baseball Around the Clock’ers are starting to file into Lawrence Dumont. I’m doing a feature for the Eagle on the fans doing it, so I’m looking forward to the interaction tonight at 3 in the morning. Can’t wait.

5:07 P.M. — Derby Twins down to their last out. It’s 13-8 in the top of the 9th inning. Not looking good for the Twins. They’ll have to work out of the loser’s bracket. More to come later. Got to get some interviews.

4:49 P.M. — It’s kind of depressing to think only three innings have past since I last updated. I’ve done so much during that time and the game…has not. Derby drew within 9-8 going into the bottom-half of the 7th inning. Then gave up four runs and are now trailing 12-8 entering the eighth inning. Lonnnnnnnngggggg game.

3:36 P.M. — In the third game of the day, the Derby Twins are struggling right now. Derby has committed one error, but have plenty of bobbles and could-be outs already in the game’s first four innings. Their opponent, the Gunnison (Co.) Colts, have taken advantage. Four runs in the bottom of the second inning opened up the game and then three runs in the bottom of the fourth have given the Colts a 7-3 lead. Still plenty of ball game left though.

NBC Tournament Blog

by TAYLOR ELDRIDGE

8:32 P.M. — The Force win 8-7. I knew it. Had to be those warm-up dunks.

7:37 P.M. — Houston adds one in the top of the 8th. It’s 8-7 now going into the bottom of the inning.

7:19 P.M. — The Force are back. They scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 8-6 lead entering the eighth inning.

6:37 P.M. — Sorry for the lack of updates. Working on my notes, so I’m good to go with the story and then I’ll be done. The Force scored three runs in the bottom of the first, but then the Apollos responded with five of their own and tacked on another one in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead in bottom of 4th.

6:11 P.M. — The Force jump out to a 3-run first inning and lead 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning.

5:29 P.M. — A late rally ends up short in a game-ending double play for the Doubledays. The A’s win 9-6 and advance, while the DD’s go home. Sad story. Warm-ups are almost over for the Houston Apollos and San Diego Force in the last battle to stave off elimination. I talked to the Force before the game. I like them this game.

Colorado Springs hero’s: RF Greg Volz (3-3, 2 R, 2 BB); C Brandon Beall (3-3, 1 R, 1 RBI); DH Anthoney Edwards (1-4, 1 R, 2 RBI).

Clarinda hero’s: CF Steven Sultz-Baugu (2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI); DH Mick Gaston (2-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 HR); 1B Stuart Smith (2-3, 1 R, 2 RBI).

NBC Tourney: Better Late Than Never

I probably should have blogged yesterday. I mean, how many writers get the chance to express feelings and observations from the only first day of the 75th rendition of the NBC Tournament that will ever happen? But between writing 800 words of Wingnuts notes, covering a game and then adding a 400-word NBC notebook (not to mention a fairly lengthy facebook message), I didn’t have the words left to truly capture such a historic day. But I’m here now.

Let me just say first that I’ve never really spent much time with Mike Dean, the NBC’s Hall of Fame administrator. I think you can call him an administrator. He does a lot of the scorekeeping and stat keeping for the tournament. He’s basically the one-man Elias Sports Bureau of this tournament. Anyway, I’ve been sitting with him in the press box for about 10 minutes, and he’s already one of my favorite people ever.

After a bunt single in which the third baseman let it roll instead of picking it up, Dean said, “I believe he wanted it to roll foul, but it had no inclinations to do so.” Anybody who can spin words like that AND make those well-spun words baseball-related is a friend of mine. Unfortunately, he’s a native Detroiter (Detroitian? Detroitite?) and is rooting for the Tigers against the Indians today. So while I rejoiced at Andy Marte’s two-run double, the hit was met with only limited enthusiasm by Dean, who is still similarly rooting for Marte to make an imact with the Tribe. What a guy.

Anyway, we’ve had some schedule changes so the first game of the day, which was supposed to start at 8 a.m., actually began at 1 p.m. and wasn’t the game that was originally supposed to be played at 8. But I’m not going to spoil that information on the blog, so check for it in tomorrow’s NBC notes column. It’ll be juicy. Or at least filler.

Still looking for that first great game of the tournament. Or at least a somewhat identifiable team. Liberal and Fairbanks played last night, but that was just an exhibition. Liberal plays its true tourney opener in the next few days, as do the El Dorado Broncos and Hays Larks…and the Derby Twins and other teams we’re all looking forward to seeing. So expect activity on the blog to pick up soon. For now, though, I’m shutting it down. Lots more words to write today.

‘Ultimate’ Warrior

There was a football being thrown around by the Wingnuts again today, but the luster of the pigskin has been replaced by ultimate frisbee. I remember playing this in middle school, actually. I was awesome at it, but I was awesome at every athletic pursuit in middle school. My skills have quickly and are quickly fading.

The champion of ultimate frisbee among Wingnuts players is Brenan Herrera, who threw one from the left field foul line to the wall in right center field. Then he threw one back from left center into the top row of stands in the furthest section down the third-base line. Dude can launch it. I’m not so talented at throwing it myself, but I can still run solid routes and catch it, which I did when the intended target was overthrows.

Herrera, by the way, isn’t quite as strong in the football department, which could be why he turned to ultimate frisbee. Herrera was owned in a pass route by Patrick Brooks, who cut in front of Herrera to catch a pass by Dustan Mohr. Also, while I was sitting in the bullpen typing an e-mail on my phone, I was hit with an errant ultimate frisbee throw. That’s where I’m at with that sport now. The guy everybody laughs at.

I should have blogged about this yesterday, but I wanted to get a whole day of having a South team at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium for the first time this season. I absolutely loved it. New names to write down on my score sheet, new colors on the video board for opposing players’ statistics and, most importantly, a new radio guy (!!!!) His name is Jeff, so obviously we’ve hit it off quite well. He recently graduated from UCLA and now is on the opposite coast doing radio for the Pelicans. Good dude. Hasn’t even accused me of homerism yet.

Speaking of the Pelicans, they’ve won eight in a row, not five as I wrote in the newspaper today. I misread one of their scores from before the All-Star break against St. Paul. So my bad on that one.

Weird game last night in that both Wingnuts starter Adam Cowart and Pensacola closer Hunter Davis allowed their first home runs of the season. And Wichita, after doing well in clutch situations the previous two games, left 13 men on base. Wanted to get the reaction of manager Kevin Hooper, but he was in his office with a player until about 10:40 last night. That happens.

Wichita made a roster move today, releasing left-handed pitcher Julio Torres and signing right-hander Diego Soto, who pitched at Emporia State this season. That’s three ex-Hornets now on the roster: Soto, Gabe Medina and Michael Sharp. Bob Fornelli has a pipeline to Wichita. Anyway, Soto was 6-2 with a 2.76 ERA for the NCAA Division II runner-up Hornets this season. He had 48 strikeouts and 21 walks in 42 1/3 innings. The walk rate is a little high, but the strikeouts look good. He could have potential as a starter if there happens to be an injury.

Looks like we’re going to get this game in after the rain earlier, so that’s good. Nobody wanted a doubleheader tomorrow, especially a doubleheader starting at noon. Yuck. So we’ll hope to keep the rain away and we’ll check to see who wins the Arby’s Roast Beef game later tonight. My money is on No. 3.
