KU 75, Memphis 68 (FINAL)

Rush with a layup off a steal. Dozier misses. Chalmers to Arthur for the flush. All momentum is with the Jayhawks. Anderson with a massive brick on a 3 attempt. D-Block with a bucket, and KU is in cruise control right now. A major meltdown for Memphis. CDR at the line and he hits the first. Huge break for the Tigers - a foul stopping the clock. He makes both; it’s a four-point game. Chalmers is forced to take a falling away 3 as the shot clock expires. This is a huge possession. Rose misses a 3, but another offensive rebound. Relegated to a jump-shooting team, Memphis can’t get it done. Or can the Tigers? Rush answers, but CDR gets a 3. Chalmers hits two more - and he doesn’t he have to be the MOP? A scrum, possession arrow to the Jayhawks, and KU leads by five with 29.9 seconds left. Collins is forced out on the far sideline, giving the ball back to Memphis. CDR misses the 3, and that’s probably going to do it. Congratulations, Bill Self. Collins at the line, and the first one rattles home. Lew Perkins exhales loudly. Collins gets the second. They did it.

Way to go Jayhawks! I can still say KSU got you, but you are the national champs, and this Cat fan enjoyed every minute watching you march through the Madness, and become NATIONAL CHAMPS! Congrats to Bill and the HAWKS!

Did anyone notice on the CBS news, that even though KU won, it was mainly lamenting Memphis? You would think we just lucked out, instead of being the better team!!

Hate to say it, but you did luck out. Missed free throws, and ref calls (right or wrong) changed that game. And the media will lean toward that lamenting angle, when the other team blew a 2:00 7 pt lead.

Congratulations to the Jayhawks and KU coaching staff! It was a fitting end to a wonderful season! Great for the Big 12 too! Especially delighted that the final had two teams playing that were not from either coast. (The Talking Heads always have the game decided in their rants…usually in the first few minutes.) It was fun watching this game go to the very last minutes. It has been fun watching this KU team play, sharing the responsibility and credit.
