Football Friday: The Big 12′s best ranting coaches, Jake Waters, Daniel Sams, Robert Rose and the challenge of Oklahoma State

It’s time for another Football Friday.

Kansas State will take on Oklahoma State in the classic Big 12 game of the Week time slot at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in Stillwater. Both teams are coming off road losses, so this game will be crucial to both teams.

Thanks again for all the questions. Let’s get to them:

This might be my favorite Football Friday question yet. The Big 12 has witnessed some epic coaching rants in recent years. We all remember Mark Mangino bringing up dollar signs. Bo Pelini was probably the all-time best ranter. I mean, he was always ranting about something, even Nebraska fans. Mike Leach once blamed a loss on his players’ “fat little girlfriends.” That was probably the best single rant. It was funny and he didn’t criticize officials. Alas, those three coaches are no longer in the Big 12. Of the current 10 coaches in the league, the top-ranter award has to go to Mike Gundy.

Postgame: K-State 17, KU 10

Kansas State’s 17-10 victory over Kansas on Saturday goes to show just how far good coaching combined with a strong running game can take a team.

Daniel Thomas ran over, around and through the Jayhawks for 185 yards and a touchdown. K-State’s defense tightened up every time Kansas threatened to score and allowed 10 points. Grant Gregory made no major errors.

Just like that, the Governor’s Cup returned to Manhattan.

FINAL
It’s a done deal. The fans are still in their seats SCREAMING the K-S-UUUUU Wildcats cheer.

Good win for the Wildcats. They run out the clock and win 17-10 to stay on top of the Big 12 North standings.

3:07 4th Quarter
Kansas is beginning to call timeouts in an attempt to save clock.

K-State can end the game with a series of good runs here.

5:20 4th Quarter
Kansas just made its first field goal of the game and has pulled to within 17-10.

The drive ate up all kinds of clock and ended with a 46-yard field goal.

Kansas State will get the ball back after the ensuing kickoff. A touchdown return from Brandon Banks would be perfect for the Wildcats right now. But a handful of first down runs by Daniel Thomas would do the trick too.

Gameday Preview: KU at K-State

The Sunflower Showdown is always a big game, but today’s battle between Kansas and Kansas State goes way beyond bragging rights.

If the Wildcats win they will further increase their lead atop the Big 12 North standings and be in terrific shape to go on and win the division.

If the Jayhawks win they will become bowl eligible and get back into the conversation for a North title.

Both teams have only a few games remaining, and anything is possible. But it will be awfully hard for either of these squads to get to where they want to be without first picking up a win in Manhattan.
