All that stands between Kansas State and a perfect 4-0 record heading into its bye week is a little-publicized game with Central Florida.

That might not seem like much of a challenge given the Golden Knights’ humorous mascot and the Wildcats’ status as seven-point favorites. If the Wildcats play smart, disciplined football, they should win.

Surprisingly, Bill Snyder and George O’Leary are only acquaintances

Ask Bill Snyder about an opposing football coach, and he normally offers up some kind of story about him.

Rick Neuheisel, Terry Allen, Paul Rhoads … He has talked about all three this season. Last year he often spoke about his friendships with Tom Osborne, Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden.

But he apparently isn’t good pals with Central Florida coach George O’Leary. Both have been in the business for years and years, but their paths have rarely crossed.

This week’s player to watch: Jeff Godfrey

JeffGodfrey Jeff Godfrey is one of the top recruits George O’Leary has ever landed at Central Florida.

In high school, his 7,251 passing yards made him the career passing leader in Miami-Dade county history, and his quick feet made him the No. 8 dual-threat quarterback in the nation according to Rivals.com. O’Leary had to beat out Miami, Tennessee and Florida State to get him.

It was not an easy process.

“Everybody was after him,” O’Leary said. “He was the 6A Player of the Year in Florida. That’s pretty good. He came up to visit and the coaches did a great job recruiting him. He liked what he saw here. He liked the situation. He liked the school.

“He’s about the team and that’s what has really impressed me about him. He’s very team-oriented. He has some great awards in his young career, but I think he plays very level headed. I’m very happy he’s in the program.”

It seems he is most impressed with the Golden Knights’ speed.

“They run really well,” Snyder said, “… Young guys who run around and not only play fast, but are fast.”

Central Florida is off to a 2-1 start, with wins over South Dakota and Buffalo. Its loss came narrowly at North Carolina State, 28-21.

Coach George O’Leary has ended a quarterback controversy by naming freshman Jeff Godfrey the starter. Read More »
