Looking ahead to Gameday: Iowa State

N Illinois Iowa St Football
Editor’s note: In preparation of the upcoming football season, K-Stated will look ahead to all 12 games on the Wildcats’ 2010 schedule. Next up, Missouri State.

Iowa State was the first Big 12 team to start its football season last night.

The Cyclones took on Northern Illinois and won 27-10. The win itself isn’t all that impressive. After all, Big 12 teams are supposed to beat MAC opponents by three (or more) scores.

But Iowa State did look good in several areas. Running back Alexander Robinson, who rushed for 1,195 yards last season, ran for 97 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Austen Arnaud added 265 yards through the air. Read More »

Position Preview: Cornerbacks

Of all the position battles on Kansas State’s football team this preseason, the fight for starting cornerback might have been the most competitive.

With Joshua Moore’s departure to the NFL, that part of the secondary was left wide open. Terrance Sweeney, Stephen Harrison, David Garrett, Matthew Pearson and Troy Butler all were in the mix.

According to the first depth chart of the season, Sweeney and Harrison won the two starting spots. But until they prove themselves in games, they will share playing time with the other three.

“Sweeney and Harrison will play out there and Garrett will get some time as well,” K-State coach Bill Snyder said. “We feel comfortable that we are two deep there at the cornerback spot and maybe not quite two deep at the safety spot. Read More »

After Daniel Thomas, who is No. 2?

Daniel Thomas is the best player on Kansas State’s football team.

Everyone from Wildcats coach Bill Snyder to superfan Robert Lipson will confirm that statement.

But after K-State’s star running back, who is at the top of the roster? Say you take part in some type of Wildcats fantasy draft and wind up with the No. 2 pick. Who are you taking?

Who do you think is K-State’s second-best player?

Looking ahead to Gameday: at Missouri

Gabbert

Editor’s note: In preparation of the upcoming football season, K-Stated will look ahead to all 12 games on the Wildcats’ 2010 schedule. Next up, Texas.

If Nebraska doesn’t win the Big 12 North this season, Missouri will likely be the team that does.

Most college football experts are predicting the Tigers to make a run at double-digit wins, and challenge the Cornhuskers one last time before they leave for the Big 10.

With Blaine Gabbert returning to lead the offense after throwing for 3,593 yards and 24 touchdowns as a freshman last year, and 15 starters returning overall, Mizzou’s offense will once again be powerful. But will the Tigers have enough defense to make it through a brutal four-game stretch in the middle of the season?

Position Preview: Safety

Secondary

A year ago Emmanuel Lamur and Tysyn Hartman were impossible to miss.

Lamur led Kansas State with 68 tackles, grabbed three interceptions and came up with a pivotal blocked extra point against Iowa State. Hartman made 54 tackles, led the Wildcats with five picks and forced a fumble.

Impressive stats for any safety duo. Incredible numbers for a pair of sophomores.

Even more is expected out of Lamur and Hartman this season. By all accounts, they appear ready for an encore.

“We can say the secondary is the strength of the defense right now,” Hartman said. Read More »

A few minutes with … Keith Burns

KeithBurnsKeith Burns may be the newest addition to Kansas State’s football coaching staff, but he looked right at home walking around Snyder Family Stadium last week.

He joked with players, relaxed next to his son Tanner (who has reportedly decided to transfer to K-State and play for his dad) and spoke confidently about the season ahead.

With experience as a former head coach at Tulsa and defensive specialist at places like Arkansas and San Jose State, nothing should surprise him as the defensive backs coach for the Wildcats.

Do you have a good relationship with your players so far?

Yes, it was never tough for me to build relationships with players, because you treat them like your own sons. Read More »

Spring football look back

Kansas State started its spring season with questions at several key positions, and many of those questions remain.

But some were answered, allowing us to better speculate how the Wildcats will look in a little more than four months when their season begins against UCLA at Snyder Family Stadium.

For starters, coach Bill Snyder has established Carson Coffman as the front-runner at quarterback.

It’s a three-man race for quarterback

Grant Gregory is out of eligibility, Billy Cosh just finished high school and Chris Harper is locked in at wide receiver.

With those factors in mind, Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder says there are only three candidates currently vying for the Wildcats’ starting quarterback position:

Senior Carson Coffman, sophomore Collin Klein and junior Sammuel Lamur.

All three are drastically different players who bring something unique to the football field. Right now Snyder says Coffman brings experience, Klein has an ideal frame and Lamur features athleticism.

Looking back at the football season

After starting 3-1 in the Big 12, playing Oklahoma tough on the road and beating Kansas at home, it’s hard to believe the season is already over for the Kansas State football team.

In Bill Snyder’s return to coaching, the Wildcats improved as the season went along, showed incredible toughness following a lopsided loss at Texas Tech and brought excitement back to the gridiron before finishing with a 6-6 record.

K-State got better in several aspects this season, and when Missouri and Nebraska were playing sub-par football while the Wildcats were sitting all alone atop the North standings, it really looked they were going to win the division.

But as it turned out, they were simply the first North team to get its act together.

Snyder and his tireless work ethic gave K-State an early jump on the field, but once Nebraska found its groove and took down Oklahoma, the Cornhuskers became the team to beat in the North.

Lamur, Hartman a dynamic duo at safety

Secondary

Look at Kansas State’s defensive statistics and they are the first two players you see.

Emmanuel Lamur leads the Wildcats in tackles (41) and blocked kicks (2).

Tysyn Hartman leads the Wildcats in interceptions (4), is second on the team in tackles (37) and is third on the team in pass breakups (6).

Both players are extremely athletic and can make a wide variety of plays on the football field, but here’s what makes them such a special combination at K-State’s two safety positions: they are only sophomores.
