Snyder still trying to counteract 08 class

On national signing day in 2008, former Kansas State football coach Ron Prince unveiled a recruiting class that included 19 junior college transfers.

It was nicknamed “The JUCO Army.”

The strategy was desperate, and everyone knew it. Prince wanted a group of players that could provide an instant impact to his team, so he gambled and went heavy on transfers.

Media and fans were critical of the decision. They had good reason to be. Three seasons later, Bill Snyder is still trying to find balance in his classes.

“That can’t happen overnight,” Snyder said. Read More »

Postgame: Baylor 47, K-State 42

Kansas State’s offense was good. Its defense was bad. That’s all you really need to know about the Wildcats’ 47-42 loss at Baylor yesterday.

But here is a deeper look at everything that transpired in Waco, anyway.

THE GOOD
1. Aubrey Quarles is turning into a real weapon at wide receiver. The senior caught six passes for 131 yards and a touchdown Saturday, and was consistently wide open. His route running improves every game, and he has the best hands on the team.

2. William Powell is no Brandon Banks, but he is awful close. The backup running back terrorized Baylor with huge kick return after huge kick return, and regularly gave K-State stellar field position. He took four returns up field for 172 yards, and broke free for a 100-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

David Garrett off to strong start

David Garrett Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder is so happy with the play of cornerback David Garrett thus far that he feels comfortable teasing him.

When asked to describe Garrett, who stands 5-foot-8, Snyder referred to him this week as “a midget in size 16 shoes,” before complimenting his strong start to the season.

“David is a competitive young guy,” Snyder said. “He makes the plays you think sometimes he really shouldn’t ought to be able to do that. We’ve put him in some situations which by and large you just look at his physical make up and you say, ‘That’s a mistake. We shouldn’t put him in this kind of situation.’ But we do and he performs.”

Position Preview: Cornerbacks

Of all the position battles on Kansas State’s football team this preseason, the fight for starting cornerback might have been the most competitive.

With Joshua Moore’s departure to the NFL, that part of the secondary was left wide open. Terrance Sweeney, Stephen Harrison, David Garrett, Matthew Pearson and Troy Butler all were in the mix.

According to the first depth chart of the season, Sweeney and Harrison won the two starting spots. But until they prove themselves in games, they will share playing time with the other three.

“Sweeney and Harrison will play out there and Garrett will get some time as well,” K-State coach Bill Snyder said. “We feel comfortable that we are two deep there at the cornerback spot and maybe not quite two deep at the safety spot. Read More »

Few surprises on K-State depth chart

As expected yesterday, Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder named senior Carson Coffman his starting quarterback.

At his weekly news conference today, Snyder once again stuck with the familiar when he released the depth chart for Saturday’s game against UCLA.

Most of his starters have on-field experience, and were names most of us in the media expected to see. But there were a few surprises.

For starters, Tramaine Thompson will start at wide receiver along with Aubrey Quarles and Brodrick Smith. Read More »

A few minutes with … Keith Burns

KeithBurnsKeith Burns may be the newest addition to Kansas State’s football coaching staff, but he looked right at home walking around Snyder Family Stadium last week.

He joked with players, relaxed next to his son Tanner (who has reportedly decided to transfer to K-State and play for his dad) and spoke confidently about the season ahead.

With experience as a former head coach at Tulsa and defensive specialist at places like Arkansas and San Jose State, nothing should surprise him as the defensive backs coach for the Wildcats.

Do you have a good relationship with your players so far?

Yes, it was never tough for me to build relationships with players, because you treat them like your own sons. Read More »
